Personal Achievement, Essay Example

Essay

The process of choosing your greatest personal achievement can be very difficult. Most people can choose a sporting event that they excel in, or  a test they scored very well on.  . For myself , the experience is quite different and much more meaningful.

The Selection has completely shaped me into the person that I am today and is the prime  reason why I want to pursue a career in nursing.

When I was nine years old, my younger sister was born at just twenty-nine weeks of gestation. Unlike most births, she  was not your typical picture-perfect delivery. My Sister  was extremely premature, she was at a high risk for not surviving. Fortunately, she made it through but my family had to make many adjustments to care for her. It was a difficult time for us both emotionally and financially. My sister required  a lot of medical attention and care. We were constantly going in and out of hospitals to visit doctors and having prescriptions ordered. The reasons became clear to me that I needed to make certain sacrifices in order to help support my family during this hard time.

As a teenager I helped my family a great deal by looking after my younger Sister. . At the time, my family was not financially stable; we had just recently moved to the United States from Moldova.  My parents  also had a huge language barrier to overcome. As a result, neither  of my parents could afford to miss a much  work. My parents  still had to provide the adequate care that my sister required. Whilst I was at  school, my grandmother would take care of my sister.  On those  nights when my parents would come home late I would always be with her. On reaching the age of  eleven I was maturer  than the other kids of my age. I would always go to medical  appointments with my parents and help in the translation . Hence, I always knew exactly what was going on with my sister and how to  care for her. As she grew older and needed less medical attention, I remained by her side. . At a very  early age I learned that it was my responsibility to always be there for her. My parents and I became a team. We were all  dedicated to helping  her in any way possible. As a teen I remember helping her learn how to read and understand mathematics . When she started school I always did homework with her and as a result returnedto night school  with my parents.. I felt like it was my responsibility to care for her in any way possible.

This experience has helped to teach me  a number of  lessons. These  similar lessons I take with me as I apply for the adult Health Nurse Practitioner Masters program I appreciate what sacrifice and hard work truly mean. These are lessons that I  learned at a young age and subsequently have never left me. My personality and character have been transformed around most of the events that took place during my childhood and adolescence. Times were very difficult for my family both financially and emotionally. Although I was still a child, at times I felt like a mother to my sister. . This Instilled  in me the drive to help others and ensure that people in need of help actually received it. I consider this to be my  greatest achievement and primary reason for wanting to pursue a career in nursing education in the masters program.

Career Progress

I started out my education at Temple University which proved to be  very rewarding. I gained a strong foundation in science from courses such as anatomy, biology and chemistry. All of the courses provided me with the basic knowledge that I would need to pursue a nursing degree at the University of Pennsylvania. Temple helped me to mature and develop into a confident and ambitious student. In addition, I learned a lot about my strengths during my time  at Temple.

When I transferred to the University of Pennsylvania as a  BSN student, my goal was to obtain  the best nursing education possible.  The desire to pursue  further nursing challenges and improve my standard of education. I was definitely not disappointed. Now I am a junior and have almost completed the  BSN program. I feel that  I have learned a lot and I am now on the right path to becoming a good nurse. Penn’s school of nursing has really taught me about what it means to be a nurse. This includes appropriate nursing interventions and more  importantly, the rationale for them. I feel like the University of Pennyslvania really focuses on teaching their student nurses how to critically think. They want their nurses to understand the reasons for their interventions The more we know and understand as nurses, the wiser decisions we will make. A nurse has to understand what she is doing in order to give the patient the best care possible. My nursing lectures have taught me a lot about different types of nursing care. They have given me the knowledge necessary to think as a nurse. Clinicals and lab have also had a an important impact on my studies and skillsets.. They have provided me with the technical skills I need to progress as a nurse and a first hand learning experience.

Goals

My goals are to pursue postgraduate  education in nursing after completing my bachelors. I am very passionate about nursing and want to continue my learning experience and education. There is so much more to learn about nursing than what is offered in just the BSN program. Nursing is so complex and ever changing. I feel like the more I learn the better nurse I will be. I am really interested in the adult health NP program. Adult Health NPs are responsible for the management of patient health. They are also viewed as  nurse specialists. They provide primary health care services in many different settings. As a nurse I will be faced with many challenges and I want to be able to over come them with proficiency I think that the adult health NP program will help prepare me for the future as a knowledgeable nurse.
