Personal Capacities for Learning Words, Essay Example

All people in the world learn their mother tongue during their early ages and acquire proficiency in speaking, writing, thinking and reading without any specific awareness of what they actually do. Hence, it turns out that the process of learning occurs unintentionally, and it is impossible to influence it at the chaotic stages of its formation. Nonetheless, it is true that some children learn the language quicker and have a much more extensive vocabulary, volume of read books, and writing achievements than their peers. Some children may even experience serious problems with learning while there are no visual problems or dysfunctions found in their development. These facts make researchers suppose that there are some personal, individually determined skills that affect the quality of learning as well as its outcomes.

It is true that inquisitive children often achieve more success in language acquisition. It is a popular piece of advice for learners to find a pen pal, or to watch serious films (foreign films in original in case of learning a second language). Another skill that lets a child learn a language quicker is the strong associative skill, the ability to voice associations and to bridge the gaps in understanding by the words already in disposal. Sometimes children show that they want to learn something, and they show their understanding of one phenomenon, while others are still closed for them. But once they see the connection between two phenomena, they see that they do not need much work to learn everything from the start, but they should only feel the difference and embody it in words. Such children do not do excessive work.

Some other skills that can be named as facilitators of language acquisition include strong communicative skills (the ability to ask peers, parents and teachers about everything that worries them). One should remember that openness and empathy in a child are very important in making him or her interact and gain the linguistic knowledge. Patience and the ability to theorize, though even on a basic level, about the practical linguistic experience, is also a great facilitator in learning (15 Language Learning Resources at Your Fingertips, 2010).
