Persuade Your Employer That You Deserve a Raise: Persuasion, Essay Example

Pages: 4

Words: 984

Essay

The following raise meeting with my superior has been planned by me beforehand. I am an employee who has been working hard for this organization quite long. My job experience in this organization is more than two years, and in these past years I have gained immensely. I have developed skills that I had been taught here, and I even exceeded my fellow workers who have worked here for a longer period of time. As it is obvious this meeting was organized for the discussion of my possible pay raise. I preferred that this day and this particular time was of the best convenience for this discussion, and would not be a burden to my boss. However I understand that the current financial and economic conditions are not the best for such a conversation, but I based myself on the situation inside the organization, where it can be said that we have got over the crisis, and we are even receiving high revenue in such conditions. I appreciate my position here, and I appraise my job and the surrounding working atmosphere. I would not want to turn down or disappoint neither my superior, nor my colleagues.

I have evaluated that my contribution in this organization is yet again limited, however in the job position where I currently am, I have been of great use because there were uncountable times when I exceeded the plans and standards set before me. I have researched the wages that fellow colleagues in this organization received, as well as people of the same working positions in other competing organizations. I would love to further work for you and will beat the standards further on. My previous accomplishments should prove that I am a well motivated worker, I have been named top employee multiple times, and I ask for a pay raise because I am a looking into the future person, searching a push forward in my attainments.

If there is a possibility for a raise, I will listen through it and make my conclusions. However the deserving raise that I would like to earn was evaluated through my research and the possibilities that this organization may offer to me. I would be fond of receiving a 30% raise of my year earnings. I suppose it would be descent since the revenue that I help create in a year is even more than that. In the previous years I have made such progress and was so productive because I often stayed after hours doing extra work in order to make a contribution. I am ready to continue working in the same regime, but this raise would be of a great stimulus to me. My fellow colleagues have avowed my endeavor, and often support me in my decisions, showing great respect to me and my efforts. I am able to understand if this raise is impossible at the moment for some particular organizational reasons, and I will be glad to listen to them.

Since my experience is limited, new teachings in corporate life always were and are of high interest to me. I will see additional courses of professional orientation if needed, however besides that I assure you that I am a talented employee with great potential. My skills most of the time exceed the skills of my colleagues. If still there will not be a possibility for a wage increase, I would like to ask for an additional vacation. I ensure that the vacation will not send me behind in my engagements before the organization, and I will cope with my job without any problem. I will be very grateful if your decision will be positive, and at the same time I will take any your decision with understanding.

Conclusion

The following argumentative essay is on a topic which is needed in the living of all who try themselves in a career as an employee in an organization. It does not matter in what industrial sphere you work, at the start there always is a superior above you. When working you get to the point when your needs grow, and the position where you are at your workplace does not finance your needs to full extent.  This is where you decide whether to change one’s job, or ask for a raise. The most efficient is asking your superior a raise, it does not hurt when you do so, but to some this process is of great anxiety, whether it is intimidating or just uncomfortable (Randall S. Hansen, 2009).  As Chester Karrass once said, “In business, you don’t get what you deserve, you get what you negotiate.” Thereby it is important to know the basic rules in negotiating a pay-raise that you should follow. First of all you need to be honest with yourself, whether you deserve the raise, and whether you made a great performance in the organization. Besides that you must be persuasive, you must have a plan of negotiation with your boss, but at the same time you should not forget to put yourself in your boss’s position. This means that you should know whether it is appropriate to ask a raise in current conditions. You should be realistic when asking the price, you should be objective and have serious reasons for making your boss believe that you indeed need a raise. Finally you should psychologically try to understand your boss, your planned meeting with him, according to the matter, should be precisely picked in order to fetch your boss in a positive mood. When discussing the matter with him you should not forget to be enthusiastic, positive and confident. At the same time be patient, you must remember that developments are achieved with the use of an efficient strategy and professionalism (John Lloyd, 2005).
