Petroleum Engineering Program Application, Essay Example

Pages: 3

Words: 727

Essay

Ever since I was a child the most popular question that was directed at me was, What do you want to be when you grow up? I had become an expert at brushing the question off as I thought that I had all of the time in the world. But as they say, time flies. Then all of a sudden months start to pass, and then years, and now I am sitting here in front of a petroleum engineering program application. But I am no longer that lost and confused child that had no idea what the future held for him. Now I am a young man ready to take on a new adventure in college. There are many factors that have contributed to my discovering my calling in life. These include some of the extracurricular and academic activities that I have had the opportunity to participate in over my high school career. However the greatest inspiration that I could ever find just so happened to be living under the same roof as me. Petroleum engineering became an interest of mine because I have seen first-hand how this major has made the lives of people so much better. The prime example of this would have to be my father.

Being offered the opportunity to attain my education at one of the highest-ranking research facilities centered on mechanical (petroleum) engineering would be an honor. I became intrigued with mechanical engineering at the age of ten, when my inquisitive-self began to evolve. I would constantly question my parents on the how and why things work. Fast forward several years, and I now characterize myself as an innovator. I seek out opportunities where others see nothing more than chance.

I believe that the right pieces have been put into place in my life to find my true calling. I have participated in activities that require major communication skills and also the ability to work well on a team. Both of these traits will also be necessary for me in order to be able to work as a petroleum engineer. My communication skills have been fine-tuned over the years. The skills that I developed as a result have really shown as I am able to express my thoughts eloquently and in an organized fashion. As a petroleum engineer, I will be faced with work every day and at times maybe for grueling hours. But I will not be facing this challenge unprepared as I have experience in the work force. I started at working at a very young age and have gained so much more knowledge of what it takes to be successful while on the job.

My future goal is to improve the petroleum extraction process and this has motivated me to go the extra mile. Its pushed me to explore more about engineering, petroleum, and how the world interacts with both. My scholastic and extracurricular activities have  prepared me for the next step in achieving a higher education. I am dedicated to achieving my lifes goals, with my most direct next goal being to get a degree in petroleum engineering. Petroleum is my passion and the journey to it is my life.

I want to be able to help these people who cannot afford to receive help. I want to make lives better because I have seen the results of what a better life looks like. Seeing the impact that this branch of engineering has had on the life of many of my family members in the past has really opened my eyes to the difference that can be made in the lives of other individuals everywhere who seek to instigate any kind of change within the world.
