Essay

To Whom It May Concern,

I am John and am writing to you to express my interest in the PhD Program in Computer Science at your institution. I did my undergraduate in Management Information Systems (MIS) and am currently pursuing my Masters in Information Technology (IT) which I expect to complete by the end of this year. My GPA at both undergraduate and graduate levels reflects my commitment to excellence and I expect to demonstrate even greater commitment to my PhD studies.

In addition to academic background in Computer Science-related fields, I also have practical experience in the banking industry where I firsthand witnessed the role of computing technologies in enhancing operating efficiencies. My work responsibilities included understanding day-to-day operations and designing and implementing computing solutions to enhance productivity. I also learnt that business people often speak different language than those who provide technology solutions, thus, there is a need for greater IT literacy among non-IT professionals.

Globalization has only increased the importance of information technology and my academic and professional experiences will allow me to bridge the gap between academic theories and real world application of computer science. I also hope to research how computing technologies will shape the global competitive landscape. PhD is a significant investment by any definition, thus, I have done extensive research to make sure I choose the right school. After learning about the PhD program at your school and the research opportunities I will have access to, I am sure this is the best choice for me.

Please do not hesitate to let me know should you have any questions. I look forward to meeting you in person and discuss how I could use my academic and professional background to maximize my learning in the PhD program.
