Phonemic Awareness, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 311

Essay

According to the word recognition view, phonemic awareness explains that written language must be learned. On the other hand, the sociopsycholinguistic view states people are born with the ability to use written language to some extent, but this skill can be enhanced by learning. Those who believe in the word recognition view believe that learning how to read is done primarily through the identification of words and that people are able to write because of this knowledge. Thesociopsycholinguistic view states that people use their background knowledge to make sense of texts and that this process can be used in writing as well. I believe with the word recognition view more because from a psychological perspective, infants are not born with a background. While they have the ability to establish one, they are not born with any of the information that is necessary for them to be able to speak, read, or write. Rather, this is acquired over time, which is noticeable as children mature. Therefore, it is intuitive that children learn to read by knowing and understanding words, and they improve these skills as a background is formed and they are able to learn more.

I would ask Hiroko to pay attention to her tactile sensations of her speech articulations, such as the tongue and alveolar ridge, when she says /l/ or /r/. By becoming familiar with these sensations, she will know which one she is using and understand how to correct it to the other if necessary. I would advise Doug to try to make the /?/ sound by bringing the tip of his tongue to his teeth, but relaxing the rest of the mouth. I would advise Pablo to pronounce “van” by touching the lower lip and upper teeth because he has trouble telling the difference between voiced fricatives. Candy has trouble telling a difference between voiced fricatives as well.
