Purpose
The purpose of the study was to determine the level of undergraduate nurse’s knowledge of and attitudes towards ulcer prevention. The background indicated previous students of undergraduate nurses did not have the aptitude or experience to treat pressure ulcer prevention. The goal is to find out why the undergraduate nurses in their fourth year of graduate school, do not have this skill. The research has to prove the hypotheses, asking question and find the objective that can interconnect the problem and purpose that leads to a clear design and theory (University of Phoenix, 2011, pg.145).
Quantitative Method
This study was a Quasi-experimental research because the premise of the research measuring the nurse’s feedback concerning their attitudes towards the pressure ulcer prevention care. Quasi-experimental research are conducted to determine the effect of a treatment or independent variable on designated dependent or outcome variables.
Quantitative Demographics
The quantitative data for demographics was graduate students that was under 25 years of age
Quantitative Analysis
The survey received a 78% response n=46. This indicated that 78% of the population responded to the survey. There was 54% of nurses that worked in the surgical ward and 44% from the renal ward.
Quantitative Results
The primary variable that was being measured is the attitudes of the nurses concerning the pressure ulcer prevention method which prevents patient bedsores. The result indicated the highest possible score is 48, the nurse maximum score was 47 and the mean and the mode was 40 and 42, respectively and stand deviation was 3.339 and the mean score was 40. This indicates that the nurses had a positive attitude towards pressure ulcer prevention techniques.
Qualitative Purpose
The purpose was to find some underlying reasons why the undergraduate nurses in their fourth year of graduate school are not knowledgeable of the pressure ulcer prevention techniques. The underlying reasons are nursing school curriculum, and nurse’s attitudes about ulcer prevention techniques
Qualitative Problem
The problem derived from patients suing for bedsores which indicated that the patent was not receiving quality care from the on duty nurses. The critical step to research is planning of the study by analyze different literature to develop your problem statement which should be done at the very beginning of the research process (University of Phoenix, 2011, pg.192)
Qualitative Collection
The interviews were structured with the elderly patients and each person was interviewed about their perceptions
Problem
The problem is a nurses in the real world are being sued because they are not adapt at taking care of patients. The nurses upon graduation is not receiving the proper training or curriculum is not adequate or it is the nurses attitude concerning prevent patients from getting bedsores. Nurses are aware and familiar with the pressure ulcer prevention techniques however, the methods that they have learned at the academic level is not up to date (Athlin, Idvall, Jernfalt & Johansson, 2009, pg.2252). As a result, the industry is being sued by patients because of bedsores. The goal is to find out why the nursing are not knowledgeable in this area.
Research Purpose
The purpose is to find an academic and professional solution to the lack of pressure ulcer prevention. The secondary purpose is to find who is at fault, the nurses, the nurse’s attitudes, and the nursing school curriculum in the fourth year.
Research Questions
The studies include a questionnaire named the Pressure Ulcer Attitude and Knowledge tool. The first section of the questionnaire consists of basic demographics questions. The second section contacts 13 questions on attitudes towards pressure ulcer prevention. The third section of the questionnaire contacts 26 closed end questions’
Objectives
The objective of the study was to examine the gaps such as training, curriculum, and poor attitudes of nurses as the possible reasons for poor training. The population consisted of all fourth year nursing graduates. It was found that students that have graduated from the nursing school have not score very well in the area of pressure ulcer prevention (Gill & Moore, 2013, pg.619).
Hypothesis
The study hypothesis was the nurses have poor attitudes towards pressure ulcer prevention which contributed to the poor care of patients that led to legal lawsuits.
Critique
The author did not provide enough background information concerning the previous training curriculum based on the treatment of pressure ulcer prevention. The author explained that the lack of pressure ulcer prevention led to lawsuits however those cases were not shared to evaluate why in those cases the patient care suffered because of lack of pressure ulcer prevention. The common factor is the physician, LPN’s, different attending specialists, podiatrist, and others that have access to examining the patient for signs of pressure ulcers or bed sores. In the real world, patient that are heavy have more bed sores. The other law cases do not indicate the patient’s acute illness however, an obese person will have more bed sores than others. Each situation that the patient was found with bed sores can have different variables that may not mean the nurse caused the patient to have bed sores. Another factor, is the patient with diabetes will create bed sores quickly no matter how many times they are turned over or moved around. The patient can have the best nursing care while they are bed ridden. The bedsores are so difficult to treat especially when the patient’s skin is already lacking nutrition.
