Purpose

The purpose of the study is to adherence of the medicine that patients take for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and heart disease. The study is also examining the predictors of the medicine regiment that is followed for these diseases. The study will determine is the medicine model Multidimensional Adherence Model is working for the benefit of the patients.

Quantitative Method

This study utilized a Descriptive research because the premise of the research is comparing the different groups, treatment concepts, and relationships between the COPD, patients male and female, and heart patient’s medicine regiments in reference to the Multidimensional Adherence Model. The purpose of descriptive research is to identify and describe concepts or variables, identify possible relationships among variables, and delineate differences between or among existing groups, such as males and females or different ethnic.

Quantitative Demographics

The patients were elderly between the ages of 55 to 75 years old with marginally more men at that women at 56.8% Patients were considered eligible if they lived in the community and had a recent exacerbation of their illness either required hospital admission or additional home visits by the staff. The population was male and female with 58.6% male participants.

Quantitative Analysis

The results indicate the study final results found out specific characteristics of these participants was married at 70%, retired at 93%, self-management 76%,medication knowledge was only 47%, primary diagnosis COPD 68%. The findings is the patients do not have a good understand or knowledge concerning the medication they were taking. More education and training is needed for the patient in drug management. In addition, the COPD patients with the primary diagnosis of COPD was an overwhelming number of 68% Caucasian.

Quantitative Results

The results indicated that the average age was 55 years of age with male and females. The males has more in the population of 56.8%. The majority was married at 59.3% and overall race was 87.3%. The heart patients diagnosis was 42.4% and 56% had been admitted in the last 12 months. The results further indicated that patients had multiple illness aggravating the COPD and heart conditions was 73.7%. Participants was married at 70%, retired at 93%, self-management 76%, medication knowledge was only 47%, primary diagnosis COPD 68%.

Analysis

The primary missing data is the name of the drugs that the patients are taking for COPD and heart disease. This is critical factor because the research should determine which regiments and predictors of medicine is working and which ones are not as effective.

Problem Purpose

The problem is the patients population is the elderly patient with COPD impacts 80 million people and the disease management model must be examined to understand if the model is proving the elderly patient with a better quality of life.

Purpose Research

The purpose is to address predictors and adherence of elderly patients in relation to the Multidimensional Adherence Model.

Research Purpose

The purpose of the research specific chronic illnesses adherence of medicines to determine if the patient is not following the prescribe disease and drug management or is the Multidimensional Adherence Model effective with the COPD and heart patients.

Research Questions

The research questions were based on age, demographics, and medicine that was taken. The patients were also given a self-behavior checklist to determine the habits or how often the patient followed the prescribe drug management schedule.

Objectives

The objective is to examine and study the COPD and Heart patient drug management and regiment to determine if it can be improved, altered, adjusted for the maximum results for elder patients.

Hypothesis Analysis

The hypothesis is the patients are not following the Multidimensional Adherence Model because of their own inability to follow the doctor’s orders. However, the research proved that the primary problem is the patients are not educated about the medicine regiments.

Critique

The primary missing piece of data is the type of medication. This information is critical to understanding whether the model is working and if the patient is adhering to the prescribe wellness plan. The exact medicine allows the researcher determine if the patient has  the wrong type of medication or if there is a medication that works better or is there side effects that causes the patient not to take the medicine every day. The study provides some good results indicating that the patient was not knowledgeable about the medication. This means the industry must examine the delivery of the drug management and educating the patient.

Outcome Research

The study is a good model for Outcome Research become future research should be based on the outcomes of the patient taking the medication versus which ones that do not follow the medicine daily regimen. The outcomes will determine, if the Multidimensional Adherence Model is proving successful outcomes of excellent patient care.
