Essay

There are two main types of routing protocol; distance-vector routing and link state routing used in packet switching for computer networks. A link state constructs a map of connectivity in the form of a graph. The graph shows; which nodes connect to which nodes. The nodes individually calculate the best and most logical path to every destination in the network. Each node runs an algorithm usually a variant of Dijkstra’s algorithm. The paths form the nodes routing table. In distance vector: Distance refers to the manipulation of arrays (vectors) distance to other nodes. A vector is an out going network interface. Therefore Distance vector protocols judges logical paths and its distance. The distance being administrative metrics calculated of hops counts giving the cost of reaching a destination. The distance vector protocols use Bellman-Ford algorithm and Ford–Fulkerson algorithm to calculate paths. which is different from link state.

Distance vector is simpler than link state. Link state weakness is it is very complex, difficult to configure troubleshoot and maintain. Distance vector greatest strength is it is well supported and has been around longer. An advantage and strength is it simple and efficient for small networks. Its weakness is it scales very poorly this is what lead to the creation of link state. Distance vector is less processor intensive and it is easy for routers processor to work with.

It is important to minimize the number of hops between routers because there s a time cost associated with them, such as mean queue length, distance, bandwidth, measured delay, average traffic, router processing speed, communication cost etc in other words the more the hopes the more time needed to process and forward data to the next hop. Too many routers would increase the total number of links and nodes results would be as stated above
