Planning Practicum Hours, Essay Example

Pages: 2

Words: 654

Essay

I intend to carry on with my practicum hours with Dr. James Eichmier at care and compassionate healthcare agency LLC located at Okemos, Michigan. So far, I have completed 36 practicum hours and I intend to complete additional 36 hours by the end of April 2015.

The following are my learning objectives.

  1. To design, implement and evaluate new heath care practice that meets the current and feature patient’s needs.
  2. To disseminate research and evidence-based practice findings to improve the health outcome
  3. To evaluate and develop heath care policy through active engagements with leadership
  4. To create and implement change in healthcare delivery system through active collaboration with different professionals involved in care provision.
  5. To design, implement and evaluate quality improvement methodologies that promote safe, effective, efficient, equitable, timely, and patient centered care.

The landscape of modern health, care delivery is fast changing. Accountability, transparent, and patient-centered care are some of the fundamental aims of the modern care delivery system. According to Edgman, 2010, orienting the health care around the need and of the patients has potential to improve the patient satisfaction with the care as well as their clinical outcomes. Patient centered care also reduces underuse and over use of medical services (Rave & Geyer, 2009). Despite the importance of the patient centered care, the U.S health care system does not achieve it. For instance Gerteis and Delbanco 2007, suggests that,  although there are few healthcare organization who have adopted the patient centered care, many more are yet adopt.  The importance of the collaboration of all professionals involved in healthcare delivery system, in transforming the Americas health care cannot be understated. It is important that the leaders in health care organization clearly communicate the strategic goals of the health care though out all level of the health care. To emphasize on the need of collaborative relationship I intend to rewrite the caring and compassionate policy manual to include a mandatory three-hours meeting. The meeting will be held on the first Monday of each month and all employee (medical and non-medical) involved in care delivery, will be required to attend.

Most of the health care facilities disregard the views of other employee such as genitors and kitchen worker. However, this is wrong. Each employee working in a health care facility plays a crucial role in care delivery. According to Gerteis and Delbanco 2007, if a healthcare organization wants to become patient centered, then they must create an environment where all their employees feel valued and treated with the same level of dignity and respect. When the work force is satisfied, they will also satisfy the customers more. The relationship between employee satisfaction and patient satisfaction has been well- documented. Gerteis, and Delbanco 2007, suggest that an important way to achieve this commitment and engagement is to involve all employees in designing and implementation of patient centered process. According to Hibbard, 2008, health care organization should be human centered not just patient centered. This mean all stake holders- including medical staff, nurses and other front line staff – should be engaged in creating effective and responsive health care systems. In similar vein Gerteis and Delbanco 2007, suggest that the biggest responsibility of caregivers is to take care of people who take care of other people. Therefore, each employee is an indispensable a part of the team and their views and opinions should be considered. For this reason my key goal in the practicum, will be to effectively communicate and collaborate with all health care professional to bring the much need  change in the complex health care delivery system.
