Pollution: Looking Back and Going Ahead, Essay Example

Pages: 2

Words: 422

Essay

As advances in the medicine industry take place, pollution has been a global concern in the recent times. This has led to various prompts by the stakeholders and the entire population to try to curb the monstrous dilemma of pollution. The war is not over.

The transformations made in this field are numerous. As the recent field relied on cellular and molecular biology, nanotechnology has so far come into existence. This is where materials on the nanoscale take effect. These materials are more effective than molecular or cellular materials. Hospital and home management have too taken place.

Home management tools and approaches are better than before. This includes use of more advanced equipment such as high blood pressure and sugar monitoring gadgets in homes. Under hospital management, the advances include the radio frequency gadget that monitors the drug administration process of patients. This reduces the risk of possible errors in administration of drugs. As all these take place, pollution has been biting.

Water is the most polluted aspect in this field. A study by the Associated Press of the US found 22 trace elements in water, whose origin was pharmaceutical companies. Antiseptics containing the toxic phenol and hydrogen peroxide are the most dangerous. Elements such as lithium, nitroglycerin, and copper are in piped water. Though not proven hazardous to man in minute quantities, aquatic life is at risk by their presence in water. Advances made to curb this pollution include use of more advanced and accurate instruments in determining the presence of these elements in wastewater before its release in domestic water. Air pollution exists too.

Manufacturing processes such as tablet coating and drying emit gases and particles into the air. All this might contain active pharmaceutical ingredients that are harmful. Laminar airflows, filters, and absorbers are in use. However, there is a dire need to improve on this technology. It is better we prevent missions than deal with the emission after their release to the environment. Soil pollution is the least expected.

Home and hospital management improvements have all been plausible. However, the mode of disposal of the pharmaceutical accessories used is still wanting. Some of the products released in septic sewers or trash are non-biodegradable. Others have a long metabolic pathway thus degrading after longer periods. This causes threats to the environment. Though disposal measures are in place, mass education is in need to sensitive and educate on the same.

Medicine technology has taken a significant step. This is in both process efficiency and waste management. However, pollution is still high. Technological advancements have to proceed.
