Population in Nigeria & Zimbabwe, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 341

Essay

Population density is one of the critical components that determine the marketability of the company products.  Marketers use the population report to identify the target market since the population is a major driver of the company’s sales. The population density and composition will be used to assess whether or not the investor would establish the McDonalds Company in Nigeria after a review of the population data for the selected area. Additionally, explore the challenges and risks that McDonald will face in Nigeria.

Nigeria is one of the most populated countries in Africa. It has an estimated population of 204,562,046, according to the Worldometer of the UN data (“Nigeria Population (2020)”).  The country’s population is expected to increase to 210, 143, 2789 at the end of the year. Lagos contributes to a total of 9 million of the population. Kano’s estimated population is 3,626,068 and Ibadan 3,565,108. World wide it is ranked in 7th position. The population density is 223 per Km2. The country has a life expectancy of 55 years, and 51% of the population lives in urban areas. Per capita income for Nigeria is $2,406.73.Given that most of her citizens live in the Nation’s most popular city, Lagos, or its major urban towns, I believe establishing McDonalds Company in Nigeria would be an ideal investment based on population demographics.

Regardless of Nigeria’s vast population, McDonald’s will face competition from other food chains like KFC, Mr. Biggs, chicken republic among others, which have been dominating the fast-food industry in the country in the recent past. Also, the constant unrest in the country due to terror groups like Boko Haram and the country’s political instability will pose as a risk (Africa Business Insight,n.d). Lastly, the government regulations on foreign business in terms of taxes and quotas may affect McDonald’s as the government tries to protect infant companies in the country.
