Human head transplant is a surgery that involves a donor (a person donating the body) and the recipient’s head being fused together. The surgery is very delicate and requires numerous surgeons and plenty of time to be successful. Consequently, it is associated with several moral and ethical issues. This study is a discussion on the issues involved in the operation. Arguably, this form of surgery should not be performed as it comes with numerous negative issues.
The ethical and moral issue from this head transplant surgery is a possibility of rich individuals coordinating with dishonest surgeons to get the bodies of some healthy persons in the black markets and transplant their heads. Morally and ethically, this is unacceptable and evil. It is committing murder, as the donor will lose his or her life in the process. There is a possibility that the surgery will not work positively and may leave the recipient paralyzed or dead. Another issue concerning the ethical and moral issues for the surgery is that, the surgeons in the operations will be put under pressure to complete the surgery since it takes 36 hours. This means they will have to work for all this time without rest. From a moral perspective, this is unacceptable and it can lead to some complication while conducting the surgery.
The surgery should not be performed because the cost is too high, meaning that only a few individuals can afford it. This means people experiencing financial difficulties will not manage to raise the amount of money required for the surgery. In addition, the number of surgeons required for this surgery is equally high, meaning that it requires a high level of coordination among the surgeons for it to be successful. Since there is a possibility of losing one’s life in the process, lack of proper coordination can result to severe damage of the recipient or even loss of life.
The time required for the surgery to be completed is also another matter of concern. It takes 36 hours to be completed. This means that the surgeons in the operation will be worn out and under pressure. This can lead to miscommunication and the level of coordination can go down, making the surgery unsuccessful in the end. When one looks at the morals and ethical issues in the surgery, it should never be performed, as the possible complications are many including the death. Moreover, when the rich people want to have their heads transplanted on the bodies of young and healthy people, can coordinate with some dishonest surgeons and get bodies in black markets. Eventually, the poor will be oppressed. There is no guarantee that this form of surgery will succeed, and this means that, the first person to undergo it will be risking his or her life. Moreover, irrespective of any circumstances and agreements between the donors and recipients, a life must be lost in the process.
Lastly, a head surgery is risky because the recipient may suffer problems such as coordination and vision after the surgery has been conducted. A small mistake by the surgeon can also result to loss of speech, weakness of the muscles and memory loss among other complications. Considering these and many other risks, this form of surgery should be prohibited.
