Tannins are polyphenols that are naturally found in plants, and have the ability to bind and form complexes with proteins. They are used in several capacities including in the tanning process, found in dark teas, and in red wines. Tannins serve beneficial functions in plants as they help protect buds from freezing, act as a chemical barrier from pathogens, and play a crucial role in growth regulation of plant stems. Little research has been conducted on the influences on organisms that live in tannin solutions. The experimentwas conducted to show how the different tannins levels of water impacted the early development in Threespine Stickleback. The experiment placed fertilized eggs in petri dishes overnight in embryo solution, taking the unfertilized eggs, and rinsing the others in methyl-blue, and split in three groups. One placed in embryo solution while the two were placed in varying levels of tannins. The results were recorded for eggs that died, and those that didn’t. The data however was inconclusive as the sample size was found to be too small to draw any statistically significant conclusion, as well as time constraints, and the measurement of tannin levels were inconclusive due to the vague estimates of the measurement tool. Overall the experiment needed to fix various problems before conclusive results can be drawn about water tannin level influences on organism.
