Practicing Persuasive Writing, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 324

Essay

Practicing persuasive writing has improved my reasoning skills and helped me expand my thinking horizon. I have also enjoyed persuasive writing because it has allowed me to better differentiate between facts and opinions. When I first started persuasive writing, I would assume that everyone thinks like me so what convinces me should easily be able to convince others as well. But over time, I learnt that people have different objectives, motives, biases, and goals, thus, an effective persuasive writing is not possible without some knowledge and understanding of the audience. Over time I have improved the quality of my reasoning because I now spend more time at gathering ideas and analyzing them from multiple angles.

I expect an extensive use of persuasive writing as well as speech during university career and especially in professional life. A good communicator needs persuasive skills in order to sell his/her ideas and win others’ support. Persuasive skills will also help me during my hunt for dream jobs when I will have to convince the prospective employers that I am the best candidate. Similarly, I will also be applying for scholarships and other award programs during university career and persuasive skills will help me present a strong case before the scholarship committees. In addition, I also plan to be actively engaged in co-curricular activities on-campus and my persuasive skills will help me sell ideas to fellow students as to how we can further improve the students’ learning experiences at the university.

When I am writing documents for others to read and evaluate, one of my biggest challenges is to anticipate as to what are the needs of the reader and what he expects to hear from me. In addition, I also have to be aware of the background of the reader and construct my message accordingly. Moreover, I have to make sure that I only include important details and avoid unnecessary content that may distract the reader from the main message.
