The purpose of a thesis statement is to provide insight of your topic areas through persuasion. The thesis statement further tells the reader how he/she should interpret the subject matter you are about to present in the paper according to significance of matter. When developing a strong thesis statement you must first collect all related evidence to the subject matter, organize the data, and look for relations between the data such as likes or contrasting views. There are many techniques that writers use to aid them in developing a thesis such as brainstorming, free-writing and mind mapping to help generate a workable thesis. Pre-writing is where a writer begins to explore his/her initial thoughts of a topic and puts them to paper. Free-writing involves writing all the ideas you have on a subject before commencing research. Brainstorming involves capturing ideas in your head and making a list on paper. Clustering involves drawing a chart with your main idea in the centre and other sub-ideas attached to the main idea.
I will illustrate examples of the techniques I used to develop my thesis for this paper on Civil Rights and Terrorism. I have used Pre-writing, brainstorming and clustering techniques to help develop the thesis statement for my paper. “Proof of my thesis statements strength is shown through addressing all of the following guidelines: 1. My thesis answers the question I am posing to my audience. 2. My thesis is very specific. 2. My thesis sticks to the point and does not wander vicariously. 4. Finally my thesis does not leave my audience wondering “How or Why”.” (“Pre-writing Strategies”). My thesis is: “Quite often seen in government, counterterrorism government action infringes upon civil right human and civil rights despite attempting to protect the community, hence legislation needs to be re-addressed specifically to counter these illegal infractions of the law.”
Teachers and students are excited about My Computer Lab’s introduction into the University for it provides all the tools needed to write under one heading enforcing an easy to use system provided by Pearson. The newly introduced composing space area is an innovative tool to help students become better writers. Penn State University’s Stuart Selber comments on the innovative composing techniques that make instruction happen for students with respect to composing. There are sections within the lab that instructors can link the students to engage in individualized instruction to improve their writing skills where the students can obtain multiple feedback under once source from their professor and peers. Students can also create and share texts in one area of the lab. Further the Writers’ Tool Kit and To Do List is a magnificent piece for self-assessment for a writer to build on his/her skills. The idea of incorporating a singe area for compositing, sharing and feedback is essential to writing because it saves time and energy and promotes the easy flow of writing for students and promotes grading ease for professors. Further the easy ability to click on links for referencing and questions to writing analogies enables students to self-access and promotes the way modern students think about writing and research. Instructors are elated with the idea of being able to create online outlines for students to follow from beginning to end of their project and having full incorporation of a project within one area. The portfolio section adds further accommodation to balance the needs of students, teachers and administration into one area. Students are able to track their grades on the section of e-portfolio with little ease as well as benefiting the professor by the ability to enter this data on one area and keep abreast and track a student’s progress in one easy to manage section. “The computer lab is a great facilitator—the latest technology to aid in teaching and managing a writing course.” (“My Comp Lab”).
