Preparation of Teachers, Essay Example

Pages: 2

Words: 477

Essay

Past reforms have ignored the preparation of teachers. Why do the authors state that “teachers have not kept pace” to meet entry level expectations. What are the problems?

The authors state that “teachers have not kept pace” to meet entry level expectations because the manner in which teachers are currently trained has not proved to be adequate. It is essential for future educators to be involved in an education program or their area of content specialty in an undergraduate program before being immersed in a classroom setting (Lloyd, n.d.). In addition, after completing this program, all teachers should be required to be involved in master’s level instruction. The problem is that these requirements are not consistent across the board, which results in a different level of ability for different teachers.

Based on the readings, discuss what we do know about good teaching, the development of exemplary teachers, and their impact on student learning, classrooms and schools.

Ultimately, we know that good teachers are those who are knowledgeable about their subject area and have been able to prove their understanding of this knowledge (Tye, n.d.). Exemplary teachers are able to integrate this knowledge with an understanding of evidence-based practice in the field of education to promote learning. These individuals are able to shape the culture of classrooms and schools, which helps students learn on an additional level as well.

Explain the 5 curricular strands considered important for global education. Do you agree with these strands? What would you add or delete?

The five curricular strands considered important for global education include well-being, belonging, contribution, communication, and exploration. While I agree that it is necessary for students to exhibit many of these traits so that their basic needs are met according to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, I believe that it is necessary to place an emphasis on collaboration as well. Young students need to be able to work together in order to develop basic skills.

Based on the data from the worldwide study described in chapter 5, identify the 4 conclusions that could impact global education.

To enhance global education, educators must focus on building knowledge, intellectual skills, social/cultural competencies, predispositions (Sirotnik et al., 1999). A synthesis of these abilities will help students facilitate concepts across a broad range of subjects, as these skills are applicable to education practices as a whole. Ideally, these conclusions will work together with the five curricular strands in order to ensure that learning occurs. It is important for teachers to focus on the broad goals of education to ensure that the education of the whole child occurs, rather than emphasizing specific subject content.
