Prescription of medicines should follow medical department’s ethical principles where the right doses are supposed to be administered using correct procedures. Patients have the right to receive the right prescription of doses according to their age levels in every pharmacy. Some abbreviations in the administration of dosages normally have various meanings, and by the use of them, one can administer the wrong dosage to the patient. Taking wrong medicine can result to a patient experiencing other physical implications. It can result to the patient dying when the nurse practitioners do not consider the right prescription to give. Ethical and legal implications, strategies of addressing the disclosure, and giving prescriptions are discussed considering the scenario.
According to the scenario, the prescriber gave the patient wrong medication. Giving a child a dose that is supposed to be prescribed to an adult is illegal in medication. Dose administration to the kid was wrong, and this does not follow the ethical principles and guidelines of the medication (Roche, Gardner, Jack, 2017). The pharmacist did not ensure that the child’s dose was inaccurate and off his age. He/she did not check on the dose’s side effects and its use to the illness that the kid had. The pharmacist did not check the dose prescription before giving kid medicine. It was his duty to ensure that the child’s dose was correct and he did not perform his duty. In this scenario, the patient was supposed to confirm a lot and want to know much about the dose given to him, and this wrong prescription would be avoided. He/she would inquire a lot on the drugs’ side effects and more information considering the medicine prescribed (Environmentally Sealed Electrical Connectors | DEUTSCH Connectors | LADD Distribution, 2021). They should ask a lot for their health purposes. As a patient’s family, they should determine the kind of dose prescribed to the child. Though they don’t provide much information concerning the drugs, the patient was supposed to be questioned about them.
According to the scenario, strategies that would be used in medication include; finding the side effects or risks of having medication errors, finding the dose being taken by the child and what it heals, checking the labeling of the drug’s container, and ensure that the doses are stored in preferable containers. The doses given to the kid could be known that they belong to an adult dose prescription (Mary, 2021). The medicines given to the child will be understood if the information in the dose containers is known. As a nurse practitioner, I would ensure that I check the labeling of the doses administered to the child (List of Error-Prone Abbreviations. (2021). It would help me get the wrong information on the container. I would also find out the drug administered to the child. After realization, I would ensure that I shout out my wrong dose prescription mistake.
In writing the prescription of the dose, there is a process that is supposed to be followed, and they include; evaluation and clearly defining the problem of the patient who is a kid in this scenario. I would clearly specify the objective of therapies, select the appropriate drug to be administered, initiate therapies, provide information giving out warnings and instructions, and evaluate regular therapies.
Conclusively, the dose prescription is determined by how the dose is assigned to the patients, and there are strategies for ensuring that the right medications are given to the patients. There are many aspects to be considered and ensure that the prescription is given correctly. Giving such a kid a dose that is not of his level may even lead to death and severe side effects. The way medicines are assigned to doctors may determine the outcome of either experiencing illness or more severe effects to the patient.
