During campaigns, presidential candidates often promise citizens that they will provide proper health care for everyone. The question is can the country tackle such an issue given the current economic situation (Rienzi and Sheaks 1). Will the incoming administration be committed to the promised health care reforms that were articulated in the president’s comments and statements? The plan will affect employers with uninsured segments, the self-employed and also those not meeting the minimum coverage standards. To achieve and realize all the promises, the administration will need to compromise.
Main facts
- Provide comprehensive, portable and affordable health cover for every American
- Modernize the health care system, to facilitate the improvement of quality in terms of patient care and contain spiral health care costs
- Promote prevention and strengthen public health to protect against disasters and prevent disease (Obama 1).
- Make health insurance available for all hence reducing spending on uncompensated care.
- Improve management and prevention of chronic conditions
- Investing in the community and clinical efforts that promote both public health and disease prevention
- IT investment, which is aimed at reducing wasteful and unnecessary spending in health care. The unnecessary spending often occurs from inefficient paper billing systems and preventable medical errors.
Good and bad aspects
The health care system in the United States is one among the most technologically advanced. It has been able to embrace the use of information systems that run on computer programs and thu, the employees need to be well versed with computer operations. Despite this fact, medical technologies are not optimally used in the country (Obama 33). This is a practice that has led to the increase in costs of medical care without necessarily improving the health of the citizens. The plan will ensure that clinical preventive services are available in all public facilities. This means that prevention of diseases will be ensured while still strengthening public health (Obama 34). The increased access to affordable health insurance will ensure that all citizens get cover through the available public and workplace programs. Insurance will be made available to all citizens ranging from the employed to the self-employed to those in small businesses. The eligibility of the plan will guarantee that all Americans get treatment regardless of illnesses or pre-existing conditions. If the plan is implemented to the latter, then the living standards of all Americans is bound to improve. The plan improves the current system as well as builds up new systems that were not available before (Obama 2). This means that Medicare for the disabled and older Americans will remain intact.
Does the plan help?
The plan is helpful especially for those living average lifestyles. This is because; the plan will enable all citizens to have equal access to medical care despite their status. Everyone will be able to procure reasonably priced health coverage despite his or her employment status. This will improve the health status of individuals, which spills down to the improvement of the country’s economy. People will also have the opportunity to change jobs without having to jeopardize their health care. This is made possible through the portable coverage systems. Children will also benefit since they have access to health care through their parents’ medical cover. This further explains how the plan will be helpful to all Americans regardless of race, sex, and religion and employment status.
