Principal Performance Review, Essay Example

Pages: 3

Words: 711

Essay

In contemporary world the process of coaching a principal is extremely sufficient tool in the entire improvement effort of a certain elementary school. This process defines expectations, enhances communication, prioritizes school goals and encourages supervisors to concentrate on the principal’s role in improving achievement for a decent amount of students. Therefore, an efficient performance review process is rather predicated on a spirit of providing feedback for growth, instead on finding enough evidence of shortcomings. Thus, the major purpose of this process is improving the overall performance instead of simply proving the incompetence. Being a principal in a relatively small elementary school with the enrolment of 150 students and an average class of 15 students per teacher I have decided to develop two strategies I think may contribute to the education children will get.

One of the possible professional development goals addressing the principal’s priorities would be demonstrating the ability to facilitate instructional practices that will eventually lead to relatively high student performance, and a safe, caring, and orderly environment. The measurable target for this goal would be the achievement of average student performance grade of about 80-90% and the effective classrooms clean up system, when every class in the school will be constantly kept clean and washed at least twice a day. All the potential discipline problems should be solved before they actually occur. To put this into practice, the principal first should begin visiting classrooms and develop efficient performance evaluations of teacher effectiveness in creating and establishing high student performance. More attention must be paid to ESOL students for they may struggle more than others. Furthermore, when dealing with the discipline problems school principal should investigate the causes of problems thoroughly in order to ensure that having all the issues in the open and start looking for the long-term solutions. Another effective step would be learning to read situations that lend themselves to potential problems before they actually occur to prevent small incidents from growing into larger problems. The evidence of goal completion would be complete trainings for using teachers’ instruments, discipline data, letters to parents and teachers, reports and descriptions of disciplinary actions. The approximate length of this plan would be about 6-8 months, which is enough for accurate monitoring.

Another professional goal addressing principal’s priorities would be ensuring the development of a system for managing school resources that maximizes the schools time on task and provides sufficient usage of funds for instructional tools to be acquired. In order for this to be done, the school principal must align the human, material, and financial resources to assure that each element is working cooperatively with the others for overall goal achievement. The principal has to provide thorough assessment of current resource management activities and make recommendations and suggestions of ways of developing more efficient use of resources. Another step would be handling personnel related resource management issues and discussing possible innovative strategies for more efficient utilization of resources. All of it must be discussed with the staff and notes must be taken to provide evidential support. Moreover, school principal should prepare charts illustrating management plan and possible changes made to it.

My third goal as a school principal would be ensuring the implementation of sufficient system of working with parents. The measurable targets for this particular goal would be satisfactory feedback from kids’ parents regarding the educational process and elementary school in whole, thus providing more extensive educational opportunities and encouragement for kids. In order for this goal to be achieved a principal must complete a plan of certain steps. First of all, implementing the parent advisory committee minutes and parent volunteer list along with recognition ceremony would be very sufficient. Also, a great idea would be providing sample lessons so parents could directly observe the learning process and make their comments. Making class pictures of children with their parent will definitely contribute to more pleasant learning environment.  Another efficient step would be hosting math and reading workshops to improve parents’ understanding of their children’s needs and how to support them. For objective evidence used to evaluate the progress I would suggest conducting surveys among the parents in order to receive their feedback. Also, I would suggest holding meetings with the parents twice a month to give them an opportunity for direct communication.
