Essay

Principle: Empowerment

A little girl has been crying for hours and stayed in the porch as she throws her shoe in the air. I caught that shoe and went closer to the kid. I asked her why she was crying and she frustratingly said that it was because of the fact that she cannot tie her shoelace. She said she has been trying to do it since she was asked by her teacher to do it on her own during the last three weeks. Understandably, the child felt so pressured to complete it as soon as possible. She mentioned how important it is for her to know how to tie her shoe within this week because that is what her teacher required of them.

I can see how pressured she feels and how frustrated she is when it comes to her desire to complete the entire task right now. She is so confused and yet is so serious about her desire to learn how to tie her shoe. Her tears specifically showed how hopeless she feels about the matter. At this point, I realized I need to find a way to bring about a new sense of motivation for her to remain her interest in the process of learning how to complete the task. I talked to her and told her that she needs to understand that her desire to learn how to tie her show lace is like learning how to walk as a child, it is not that easy, but it all comes gradually through regular practice.

I then gave her a shoe box, with six holes. I placed in a shoe-lace around the holes and asked her to tie the laces together and later on make a bow. Her first tries were not that successful, however, after the third try, she has been able to complete the task and I saw a little smile on her face as she told me “thanks”.

Principle: Customer Service

I was walking through the hallway when I found a disgruntled customer who told me that she will never go back to the shop because of the service she received. I was appalled to hear the matter. I asked her what she did not want about the service that she received from our staff. She said she waited for so long in the line hoping that she would be served real soon. However, when another client came in and did not even fall in line along with the other clients, that client was served immediately by the staff. The woman felt that the staff played favorites putting her in a lesser ground.

To deal with the matter, I asked for her apology and asked her what she wanted. She specifically told me that she just wanted to inquire about a product she would like to buy from the shop. I told her that I might be able to give her the information she needs. However, she told me that I was just doing that to save the name of the business and that I was afraid she would bad-mouth our shop to other clients. At first, I wanted to shout at her or at least tell to her face that I was doing it for her and not for the business or anything else. I did realize though that such a response would indeed put the business in jeopardy.

I then decided to keep my calm and respond to that accusation in a balanced manner. I told her that I simply wanted to help, but if she refused to tell me what she wanted to ask for, they I would understand. She finally told me what she wanted to know, and I responded to her accordingly which she thanked for. I realized from here on that I did the right thing and remaining calm allowed me to become more reasonable with the disgruntled client.

Principle: Coaching

My niece was going out for an essay competition and I feel that I need to provide her some moral support.  I saw her scribbling words in her paper the night before the competition. She crumpled a couple of papers already and threw them out in the trash. She said they just will not do for the competition’s standard. I then asked her to tell me what the topic of the essay would be. She told me it was about her most important ambition in life. I asked her what it was, and she finally told me that she did not know what to write because she wanted to do so much and she feels like she has the capability to do a lot. However, it could be understood that it is this confusion that keeps her away from being able to write her essay. I then asked her to make a table and write what she wanted to do. I told her she needs to weigh her interests and focus on the one that she desires to do most. It could be understood from the table she made that it was her desire to be a designer that appears to be the most important for her. I then helped her create an essay draft for this ambition which she said she would use for the actual competition. After the competition, I heard that she won out of 50 other essay writers.

Conclusion

The experiences I had with the people mentioned herein taught me how important it was to adjust myself to the needs of others in order for me to affect them in a much viable and positive manner. I knew that putting aside my personal desires and personal ideas because of others’ welfare would provide a better chance for me to further impose a more refined response to the needs of people around my environment. This would allow me to be more reasonable and rational in facing the challenge of relating to others and their needs.
