The value of proactive vs. reactive approaches in education has long been the subject of hot debate. On the one hand, proactive approaches mean that education professionals can forecast, predict, and prevent undesirable experiences in school environments. On the other hand, reactive approaches are critical for schools to be able to timely respond to emergency situations. However, these are proactive approaches that make it possible for schools to develop effective prevention strategies. In the context of education, proactive approaches are not limited to designing and using reliable security equipment or implementing punitive measures for noncompliance. Rather, the essence of proactive approaches in education is in trying to establish an atmosphere of safety and connectedness between the students as a matter of improved security and safety.

Really, prevention is better than reaction, because it is due to prevention that schools and professionals can avoid irreversible consequences and effects of negative events. More often than not, schools view proactive approaches as a matter of purchasing and using as much equipment as possible to monitor student behaviors and minimize negative incidents. Unfortunately, not all professionals realize the value of true discipline and its role in proactive approaches in education. Rules are not everything, and it is due to well-developed communication and close human relationships that students can realize the value of true discipline, the value of safety, and the value of safe behaviors to prevent emergency situations. Student misbehaviors are the results of misbalanced school climate and the lack of clear guidelines and expectations. “Proactive” means that schools exercise a range of policies and tasks, which prevent conflicts among students and prevent students from breaking the basic rules of school conduct.
