Problem based learning can be described as a learning strategy involving the study of a problem scenario and designing objectives based on the problem. In most cases, students learn by discussing the problem or trigger material to determine what is needed for the learning activity. Students disperse to carry out self directed study followed by a meeting to share and discuss the findings about the problem (Duffy, 2005).
Most of the current methods of PBL take an approach of student-centered and task-based student learning. Such methods include team work discussion, recording, cooperation, presentation and self directed PBL. Group learning, as an approach to problem based learning, facilitates easier acquisition of knowledge concerning a problem at hand, and enhances several other learning attributes like skills of communication, teamwork and tactics of solving the problem. During group learning, members learn how to respect other’s opinions, views and sharing of information through independent thinking. Other current methods used in problem based learning include randomized and specific controlled trails for a certain problem. However, these methods are not highly encouraged because they may lead to biased results (Bridges, 2002)
In the past, the approaches or methods used in PBL took the approach of teacher centered where rote learning and memorization were common. Tutorial listening was mostly is used, where students could go to class, listen to a teacher, write notes, read them and memorize.
In conclusion; problem based learning will be most effective to students if the current developments like the use of technology to support PBL are enhanced. The advantage with PBL is that the objectives are problem focused thus enabling the learner to concentrate on what is relevant. Besides being a learning tool, it is also an educational strategy geared by target philosophical principles, goals and objectives (Duffy, 2005).
