No matter how one’s life seems perfect, there are generally underlying difficulties that he or she goes through. Things are no different for Jay Gatsby, one of the protagonists in The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzerald. Gatsby is wealthy, and there are many rumors about him of the things he has done, but deep inside his hear he goes through some emotional and relationship struggles throughout the novel. Unfortunately, he ends up dying from the same problems that were presented to him at the beginning of the book. In this paper, I will illustrate the issues that Jay Gatsby went through and how he managed to overcome them in various parts of the novel.
One of the primary problems that Jay Gatsby faces is loneliness, as presented by many events in the novel. Due to this state, Gatsby was forced to hold huge parties to have a company with him. As part of his usual routines, Gatsby had to hold parties;
“There was music from my neighbor’s house through the summer nights. In his blue gardens, men and girls came and went like moths among the whisperings and him champagne and the stars.” (3.1)
It can be noted that, from the above quotation from the book, Jay Gatsby spend a lot of money to entertain his guests to have company in his big house, where he felt lonely. But finally, he did not manage to get out of his loneliness as he continued to hold more parties and chase after Daisy, the woman he was in love with.
The other problem that Jay Gatsby was experiencing was lack of love, something that he was continually looking for from Daisy. Two men were wooing the latter, that is, Jay Gatsby and Nick, who were both wealthy. One of the incidents in the novel, Gatsby was talking to himself;
“I decided to call to him. Miss Baker had mentioned him at dinner, and that would do for an introduction. But I didn’t call to him, for he gave a sudden intimation that he was content to be alone—he stretched out his arms toward the dark water in a curious way, and, far as I was from him, I could have sworn he was trembling. Involuntarily I glanced seaward—and distinguished nothing except a single green light, minute and far away, that might have been the end of a dock. When I looked once more for Gatsby, he had vanished, and I was alone again in the unquiet darkness.” (1.152)
The woman Gatsby was in love with was gone, and their relationship was not the same again. He finally gets attention from her, but he dies before they could repair their past relationship.
And finally, Gatsby finds himself at the center of many deceits and lies about his character and way of life from his neighbors. Some of the people in the novel were saying;
“Somebody told me they thought he killed a man once.”
“I heard that from a man who knew all about him grew up with him in Germany,” he assured us positively.” (3.30-35)
From the above excerpt, it is crystal clear that Jay Gatsby was false fully manifested by the people that knew him. However, he does not seem to be bothered by such statements as he goes on with his life without questioning any of the above misinformation.
In a nutshell, Jay Gatsby went through life in his way since life presents different challenges to various people. He, however, manages to address some of them but untimely death meets him at the moment when he had solved the biggest problem in his life, love.
