Research Paper

A process, the hospital, could analyze is the process of the treatment of long term patients who need to be moved to a home based care in order to free up resources for other patients. This process could be improved by having a set criterion that qualifies long-term patients for specialized home care. Such criteria could include, stability in their current condition, whether or not the patient is terminal, the amount of care required to sustain the patient, the costs of maintaining a nurse and such.

Patients who qualify for such status are coma patients; advanced senior citizens, who can afford the expense of machines to assist them in basic functions such as breathing, individuals with inoperable terminal cancers. Children with severe illnesses that affect their mobility are also under this category as living in a hospital, while advantageous to their health holds them back in terms of social interaction and education. This process will streamline the management of resources such as heart monitor machines, oxygen tubes, beds, as well as nurses on duty and doctors doing their rounds. All these resources could go to individuals who have greater needs such as patients recovering from major surgeries or mothers who are recovering from difficult childbirths.

The process could include an extensive and thorough examination by a doctor as well as a revision of medications by the pharmacist and a serious discussion with the family involved with the patient on the alternatives of a prolonged hospital stay. In an effort to increase revenue, the hospital could begin a program of having live in nurses on a rotational basis.
