Product Choice and Personality, Essay Example

Pages: 2

Words: 632

Essay

People are quick to judge others on their appearance and their manner of dress. The products and clothing that people buy does say something about their personality. With the various brands of clothing and shoes, there is definitely sometime to be said about the choices that a person makes, and is often associated with the type of person that they are. A smaller decision that sometimes gets overlooked is the fragrance that individuals purchase to wear. There are several types and while most people believe that they simply pick what they like, there may be more to it than that.  The different types of fragrances can be directly related to a person’s characteristics and personality, read on for more.

Likes Versus Dislikes

At any given time the department store fragrance counters are packed full of individuals attempting to find their favorite scent. The reason that there are so many is because everyone’s choices are different. What one person may think smells great, another may find repulsive. That is the reason that there are so many choices and brands that individuals have to choose from. Fragrance manufacturers have spent a great deal of time, like any profitable marketer learning more about the types of people that choose specific scents. For example, some suggest that females that choose a perfume with a cake like scent, such as Brittany Spears, Fantasy, are younger, sweet and have a care free personality. Powdered smelling perfumes attract more of a fun loving personality of various ages, but individuals that have an outgoing personality, but are old souls at heart. Floral smells are said to be for women that are flirtatious and commonly desire the center of attention, an example of this type of perfume is, Giorgio’s Armani Code.

Some suggest that men choose cologne based on their personality and view of their manhood. Fragrances that are based on cinnamon, pepper or ginger are commonly produced by a product known as Musk, and is produced by male elk in various areas of the world. Some claim that the musk smell is similar to a “man’s smell” and produces an aphrodisiac effect, such as Jovan Black. Colognes that have superior incense, such as a hearty wood smell, typically attract men that view themselves as strong and authoritative. Power seems to be the dominance and makes sense with the fact that the hearty wood smell would be a stronger scent than some of the other types of colognes. Citrus based colognes, such as Lucky You are sweet smelling and have a fruity scent. This type of cologne is said to be chosen by men that have high stress level jobs. The citrus smell is said to have a calming effect on others and is the reason that individuals in high stress levels typically migrate to this type of scent.

In conclusion, everyone is certainly attracted to different types of products whether it is shoes, clothes or fragrances. It would be a dull world if everyone enjoyed or was attracted to the same types of products. There does seem to be some truth in individuals picking or attracting to certain types of products though. After all there are some that choose a brand and stick with it for many years, while others will jump brands, but follow a particular pattern. What manufactures suggest and certainly hope for is the fact that individuals will become dependent on their brands, rather than following their attractions. Most women and men alike shop for the perfume or cologne that smells the best on them and is the scent that they like the best, however it certainly seems that some are consistent with their choices. Personality has a great deal to do with the types of things that people like and it likely stands true with their fragrance choices as well.
