Describe how your professional and personal experiences will contribute to the Executive MBA class and teams

Throughout my entire career, I have held many different positions at multiple companies within the construction industry.  However, each of my positions have been or merged into some form of management capacity.  I have several years of management experience to pull from and will definitely be able to contribute this real-world experience towards applying managerial examples and situations for almost ever topic we will cover throughout the MBA program.  This experience is a strong intangible asset that I will never lose.  Regardless of the circumstances, the positive and negative experiences I have faced over the course of my 18-year career have been exciting and highly educational.

Working in the construction industry, I know that no two days are exactly the same as a director or manager.  Oftentimes, a strong plan does not go according to the design and desires set forth, and managers must be able to adjust and make quick decisions.  Utilizing limited funds and resources, a manager within the construction industry must also have a strong grasp of project finances and make strong considerations to ensure that every penny is spent the right way and every project is performed as efficiently and effectively as possible.  It is absolutely critical that every person on a construction team works as one single unit and performs his or her job to the best of their abilities.  The manager must be able to provide strong leadership through experiential and knowledge-based resources.  These are all components that I have gained over the course of my career and I would love to share my management experiences with my peers to broaden our learning experiences and consider circumstances and situation that may not otherwise be covered in a conceptual textbook.

Furthermore, it is clear that being a former business owner and working in the corporate world, I will be able to apply my experiences to the other classmates throughout the Ross Executive MBA program.  Clearly, working hard to start up and build a company is not an easy task.  I have real experience that can be shared with anyone looking to build their own company or manage an organization the right way through applying ideals and personal goals to actual management experience.  However, I also have the unfortunate experiences of seeing my own company fail and forced to close down.  This was not a pleasant experience of course, but I have seen how the economy, competition and cash flow issues can greatly impact a company and a manager’s abilities to perform at successful levels.  There is no professional in the Ross Executive MBA program or any other business program throughout the country who wishes to start a company and see it eventually close down.  Nevertheless, this is a strong reality during the difficult economic times especially when managers are not prepared to handle adversity.  I have faced this adversity and can provide several years of managerial insight toward course discussions.
