Project in the News, Essay Example

Words: 834

Essay

In my view, this is a project because it has specific objectives that need to be completed within certain specifications and consumes resources (human and nonhuman like equipment, money, people). Furthermore, they have defined dates for start and end of the project with funding limits. In addition, they cut across several functional lines, which mean they are multifunctional (Kerzner, 2013). The justification of this undertaking being a project includes the following:

  1. Project initiation where it has recognized the benefits associated with the project and documents are prepared, which enable project managers appointed to sanction the project.
  2. Project planning, which involves the scheduling of activities, various risks are evaluated, and resources needs are defined. In addition, work requirements and the quantity and quality of work are all defined.
  3. Project execution entails managing and directing of work, negotiations for team members engaged in the project, and working with all team members with an aim of improving their capabilities and understanding.
  4. Project control and monitoring involves the tracking of work-in-progress, predicted outcome is compared to the actual income, impacts and variances are analyzed, which has helped in making adjustments in the project.
  5. Project closure will look into verification processes to ensure that all work is accomplished, paperwork closure by administrators, and closure of the contract and finances.

Project objectives

  1. Stop environmental abuse by engaging the Federal government in the cleaning of Gowanus Canal.
  2. Emphasis is on environmental conservation that ensures that all industries and individuals polluting the environment are charged.

Deliverables are the end results or outputs of project completion and they are tangible outputs, as well as measurable that take the following forms (Kerzner, 2013):

  • Software Deliverables are usually paper products that include reports, studies, and documentation.
  • Hardware Deliverables are items like equipment and a prototype.
  • Interim Deliverables progresses and evolves as the project proceeds and may include interim reports provided that lead to the final report of project completion.

The project is faced with a lot of risks and is a milestone in the successful completion of the project. For this project, the risks involved include pollution of the environment that results in poor health among individuals around the Canal. For example, residents around this area will be affected by airborne diseases due to the pollution and is hazardous to their health. Another milestone is the change in technology, which hampers the progression of the project. Change is inevitable and engineers need to embrace the technological advancements that occur. Therefore, change should be accommodated in project planning to enable the execution of the project. In essence, this will promote the success of the project if change in technology is incorporated. The final milestone in this project looks into the special requirements of the customer’s and the scope changes. As earlier identified, change is inevitable, but the customers of enterprises like Brooklyn’s row houses are faced with the pollution carried out by Benson Metal, Sixth Street Iron and Metal companies among others. Therefore, the customers need to live in environments that engage in environmental conservation because it affects their progression and health status. These customers are also not ready for the changes that are going to be done and having to talk to them is a problem since they all have different views and opinions.

The limits include issues of compliance and regulations at Riverkeeper need to be addressed because it is an obstacle that has yet to be resolved. Secondly, the past environmental injuries have no solutions and are an increasing injury because the byproduct of the manufacturing plants has seeped into the ground and also into the shallow water. Also, coal has been turned into gas and is a limit and or exclusion that need investigation because it relates to environmental concerns. The media have also been excluded yet they play a major role I enlightening the customers on the progress of the project. The mandate of the multimedia is to ensure that information is disbursed to reach the end users who help in conserving the environment against pollution.

The major customers in this article encompass:

  • Customers of Brooklyn row houses
  • Company stakeholders
  • The young children
  • Federal government
  • Global environment

Customers in such cases, have concerns like how they are going to live in such environments because their sewers burst and are a health hazard. To some, their children play around the canals and pick these metals and put them in their mouth. Are there any arrangements made to provide medical finances to these families because they need to be compensated. Benson collapsed and metal junk and concrete blocks fell into the water, which is used by many of the residents. What measures has the Environmental Conservation Department and federal Environmental Protection Agency to avoid a repeat of the same from occurring? This is a concern to them because it is dangerous for their children who like using such equipment during their play time.
