Propaganda, Essay Example

Essay

In a recent video released by North Korean press, it says that Americans use snow to make coffee and buy guns in order to kill each other (especially children). The video goes on to say that people in America live in tents, even during the winter, and that there are no birds in the trees because the people have eaten them all. After showing houses devastated by a hurricane earthquake, the film’s narrator says that American houses fall down very easily and that this is a common thing in modern America. The narrator goes on to say that Red Cross provides materials for curtains and walls and that the material is made in North Korea.

The video is trying to show how American live so that North Korea can feel better about itself as a country. If North Korea is better than America then North Koreans will feel better about their living situations (since America is a first world country, then depicting them as living in tents and having to eat birds shows how much North Koreans are than Americans). The video goes on to depict how Americans live in tents and the basic structure of those tents is cloth provided by North Korea. Thus, North Korea is not only seen as generous but as having better materials than America. It’s a message two-fold message in which Americans are put down and North Koreans are seen as benefactors to what is supposedly a “great” country in North Korea’s eyes. The video’s underlying message is clear, America is a terrible place to live because they don’t have enough food to feed people that they have to resort to eating birds, and they all have to live in tents or shanties because they don’t even know how to build houses.
