Essay

Amongst the most significant challenges is that of speaking, reading and writing of English Language for the large immigrant community in America.  This has created an educational gap in mid-stream Education in the US.  This is compounded by the poverty gap and the inability for a large number of these people to access the US educational system.  These cognitive and social challenges remain at the forefront for integration into American society.

This needs to be addressed at a number of distinct levels.  The need to provide increased English as Foreign Language (EFL) training for immigrant communities, the need to provide access to the education system that is within the financial means of poorer communities and to assist in the cognitive development of those with learning disability problems.  Much of this remains a social problem but there is also a need to integrate this with medical support.

Cognitive Based Therapy (CBT) may be used to assist families that have problem children with learning difficulties or cultural awareness problems fitting into American Society.  These techniques are often utilised by experienced social workers who engage with families in the local community in order to assist them in finding solutions. Cognitive models help address this by providing a combination of psychotherapy and behavioural therapy in order to establish a set of principles or goals that can be applied to the concept of Education and Learning. The concept of strategic behavioural therapy developed the need to build on individual cognitive frameworks. Two of the major contributors were Aaron Beck and Albert Ellis. Both of these were influenced by Freud (instinct), Jung (mysticism) and Adler (common sense). Hence, from the perspective of the behavioural counsellor – thoughts resulted in feelings and these in turn led to behavioural responses.  (Friedberg, 2010)
