Essay

Meet-and-Greet

The student’s alias is Cameron.

What kinds of things do you think about, worry about, enjoy and plan for?

C: Dad goes out on the water for a long time and does- just, we don’t know if he is gonna be back for my baseball game and Mom gets upset. Tired. She says tired. And I play with C—. He’s big and he picks me up and swings me. He gets in trouble always when I get hurt. It doesn’t happen much but I laugh. ‘Cause he gets in trouble.

What subjects do you enjoy most and least?

C: I like math. Except for when it’s hard. I don’t like to read.

What kinds of hobbies or sports do you enjoy?

I play baseball and run outside in the back yard grass. Me and my little sister bounce, but she’s really little. With my friends, I kick a soccer ball around at lunch, sometimes play basketball.

If you could change something in school that would help you be a better student, what would that  be?

In the back you can’t hear anything and some of the other boys throw stuff and spit stuff and it hits you hit in the head. It’s all exciting when it’s almost time to go home or go outside or to go for Christmas to visit. I like it when we get to share our plans, ‘cause I always have something real fun to do.

What kind of TV shows do you like… name a few?

Oh, man, I like Power Rangers, but only the ones with the pink and the black rangers. Sometimes I watch Yu-Gi-Oh! too. I play like we’re in the show on the playground. SpongeBob. Patrick’s my fav’rite. He so stupid but he always help SpongeBob.

What kind of video games do you play?  Do you play these games alone?

I play on PS3. Mom like the Wii better, but all of the cool games are on PS3 and I play those with my Dad or my friends when they come over. I like games where you have to shoot the bad guys and do stuff to win, like ride around or sneak through a house.

What kind of books do you prefer to read?  Do you have favorite titles and/or authors?

I read comic books and Hank the CowDog. I used to more read Goosebumps, and my teacher said should look at other stuff in the library, too. There are some good motorcross magazines with cool bikes where they’re doing flips with the helmets on. I could never do anything like that.

Have you ever helped another student figure out how to do an assignment?

In math. My friend, R—. Just a little cause the teacher got mad at me cause she was talking. He is good in other classes, though.

Have you ever asked someone to help you know what to do?

I ask my dad and my teacher.

Do you have a plan when you sit down to do homework?  What would that be?

My parents make me sit down every night before dinner. I just do as much as I can and then do the rest in the morning.

How do you get homework completed when you get stuck or bored?

If it’s really hard I ask for help, but most of the time I just stick it in my backpack and think about it tomorrow.

What is the hardest thing about school?

When the teacher calls on you and you don’t know the answer.  Or when you get in trouble.

What’s the easiest thing about school?

The nurse lady sends you home if you even have a headache. I miss my friends. That’s what I like about school.

Do you ever miss school in the summer?

No, well- just my friends.

Please bring six books next week that you really like that would give me an idea about what kind of a reader you are.

What topic would you like to learn more about?  Any topic, not just school topics.

I don’t know. I like vampires and stuff like that. And zombies. I shoot them when I play with my dad.

Please write for 10 min. about your school and what a new student should know about, to be safe and happy.  It is usually hard for new kids to be included.  How could they go about meeting and making friends?

Everybody is gonna look at you at first, and some kids will pick on you. At first, you will feel really weird around all the other kids. You need to get the teacher to help cause you don’t have any good friends yet. When you are in your classes you’ll set next to some kid and start talkin’ and then you’ll be best friends and you’ll have someone to help look out for you. It’s not that bad if you’re not mean. The girls talk a lot. And they laugh a lot. And some of the boys are funny in class and it gets you in trouble and your mom’s always getting called. So you have to make sure that you don’t get mad at everybody all the time ‘cause the fights. And you don’t want to be new and fight everybody. So just get a good friend and get your parents to help on your work for home. And the teachers are mean if you argue or yell.
