In the case of Sandra, the psychiatrist was able to get out from the woman why she actually thought of quitting. Nevertheless, she was able to set the groundwork, to help Sandra see what reality is about and how she should be able to manage it. The groundwork basically set a good mark on what she really wanted out from the counseling and the therapy that she is supposed to undergo. Getting the meaning of smoking out of Sandra was a good approach in helping her become more connected to the process. It was established during this part that Sandra was not at all that bad; that it was the smoking that was the one that should be removed.

Relatively, the psychiatrist also made sure that Sandra would not feel that she was not being directed to do matters in the right way; instead, she was given the chance to decide for herself and become the one in control in the whole process. Questions as “would you like to come back again?” gave an indicative directive that the psychiatrist wants Sandra to be the one to decide on the matter. This allowed Sandra to see how the supposed therapy for withdrawal is going to work; it made her feel comfortable and had her see the value of her decision at a more responsive manner. For a person who loves smoking as a part of her life, it was rather effective for the psychiatrist to take a relative approach that would best help Sandra know that there is someone she could confide to; someone who will listen and someone who would try to understand her at a level of professional approach that would help her get rid of a nasty habit for the sake of becoming a better person and a better mother.

In consideration with this particular case, it was obvious how the psychiatrist was able to connect to her client; allowing her to become more effective in determining the goal that the client had in relation to the desire that she has with regards quitting. Her willingness to step further made it possible for Sandra to see the reality, understand that she as merely undergoing a habit problem; and that it can be successfully broken through time.
