Pages: 1

Words: 320

Essay

What makes a particular piece of creation appeal to a particular generation? This question could be answered depending on the thinking process of individuals based on their ages and the experiences they have had as part of their lives. It could be clear then that when it comes to interpreting songs and other forms of art, the meaning of each work would differ depending on the age and personal background of the ones listening. For instance, Eminem’s song Beautiful may be interpreted differently by listeners depending on their age range.

In relation to the explanation of Gilligan in relation to the process of learning that young individuals take into account, children ages 2 to 7 may have no complete understanding of the song except simply going along with the tune and responding to the melody and the regularity of the beat of the rap music. Fully understanding the song might not be that possible to occur. Since the lyrics of the song utilizes several metaphorical descriptions that may instantiate direct meaning to these young generation of listeners. This imposes on the idea that when the line reads ‘let’s exchange shoes’the listeners at the age of 2 to 7 might actually think that there is an exchange of shoes happening in the story that is being portrayed in the song.

On the other hand, it is expected that children ages seven to 11 would actually be able to decipher the meaning of the song based on a much deeper context. Having the chance to experience discrimination and the desire to be accepted in their age, these listeners might be able to relate to what the song dictates especially when it comes to standing true to one’s self no matter what other might say otherwise. Their personal connection to the song puts them in a position that allows them to see the real message that the rap-singer wants to send out to his audience.
