Psychologist in the School System, Research Paper Example

Pages: 1

Words: 273

Research Paper

Psychologists maintain an active role within a school system.  School psychologists must be certified and/or licensed in the state after completing a specialist-level degree program (National Association of School Psychologists, 2003).  They must also receive additional national certification and a number of relevant classes to prepare them for their role in a school.

School psychologists often address learning and behavioral problems within a school (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2010).  They may offer solutions based on a counseling setting, or they often work with parents and other personnel within the school.  School psychologists can often oversee strategies related to the problems and healthy development of individuals and schools (Council for Exceptional Children, 2010).

A school psychologist can see multifaceted roles within a school.  A school psychologist can also be centralized within a school system as a whole, or within a single individual school (2010).  Within a school or a school system the responsibilities and influence of the school psychologist is certainly not within one dynamic, but extending to the students, parents, school personnel, and topics within a school or school system.

According to the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP), a school psychologist must provide consultation, evaluation, intervention, prevention, and research and planning services (2010).  These services help to demonstrate the comprehensive impact of the school psychologist to the aforementioned parties expressed.  As a result, the role of the school psychologist is certainly multifaceted and integral to the school or system in which he or she is engaged.
