Public surveillance system involves engaging the public to pursue public interest through monitoring what happens within the society. Surveillance involves systematic collection, observation, and analysis of events within a given society. It is typically done with intentions and with an aim of attaining given objectives. Surveillance in any given society has a core aim of providing information necessary for implementation of public health and the action to be taken in different fields. Surveillance system in the USA, for example, is used as a tool for measuring risk factor. This approach is significant to the public health departments in the process of undertaking its operations and thus acts as a routine for preventing risks.

The system in public health is essential in the process of planning, achievement, and assessment of practices and exercise related to public health. Therefore, the process is, undertaken with the objective of bringing the information concerning prevention and control measures of diseases. Surveillance in public health plays a significant role in empowering decision makers in their effort to lead administer effectively. This is usually achieved through the provision of timely and significant evidence, which provides a sense of direction. The population health will benefit from the process since new methods of preventing and controlling of epidemic diseases are put in place.

Organizations have put in place programs with have set goals and objectives, surveillance is thus become significant to such organizations since it assists in monitoring their progress. In the health sector, for example, surveillance systems has been set up and used in immunization of the epidemic diseases. Several organizations in developing countries have step in to assist in strategies meant for disease control this has been achieved through sustaining human labor in appropriate fields. These organizations have been of significance to the public.
