Police officers perform a wide range of support and technical duties in ensuring criminal justice prevail. Police officers are the first contact that a criminal or offender has with the criminal justice system (Waldron, 174). Hence for one to qualify as a police, they should prove they possess strong skills is several fields that play key role in ensuring criminal justice is achieved. One of the assignments that a police officer has to fulfill is identifying problems that may face law enforcement personnel in identifying the wanted individual. In addition, police officers’ determines the relevancy and accuracy of all information given.
To be able to determine the accuracy of the information given concerning the individual, one needs to make intense inquires and requests for immediate disclosure of all information in the system concerning the individual with an objective of using the information identify any problems concerning the information given. After gathering and determining the accuracy of the information and identifying the problems, the officer generates and evaluates all alternatives using sound judgment that is based on the information obtained. For one to be able to qualify as a police officer, they need to show high level of competency in various fields such as in writing, planning and evaluating, oral communication and in problem solving since these skills are highly required.
To be able to work as police officers one requires being able to work in a stressful environment. One should be ready to be faced with threats and risks that are not very easily identifiable when doing this job. In some cases, USCP police may be required to use extra force when making some case decisions. The only way through which one can be able to work in stressful environment effectively is by possession strong problem solving skills where one is able to accurately identify the problems and make sound judgment from the generated alternatives.
To be able to work as a police office one need to have strong oral communication skills. They should be able to give accurate information to individuals. When giving the information, the officers have to ensure they take in to account the kind of information and the targeted audience. In addition, police officers should ensure they are able to communicate well with others and convincingly especially in cases where alternative judgments need to be evaluated on a delicate recommendation have to be given (Waldron, 251). They should also be ready to listen to others and be able to connect non verbal signs and responses to gather the required information. Use of verbal signs and responses will help them in determining the accuracy of the information given and in developing the correct strategy of ensuring justice is obtained. Possessing strong oral communication skills enables the officers to effectively pass on all the require information and in addition obtain an additional information from the audience after listening to their side of the story.
Since the criminal justice agencies may require written information concerning the individual being investigated, the officer should be able to communicate effectively in writing. They should be able to use grammatically correct English, proper punctuation, and spelling. They should be able to pass the information in an organized and concise manner. The written information they give may include technical material specifically included for particular audiences.
To qualify as a police officer, one should be able to work effectively in a team environment. To be able to be a good team player, one should ensure they actively participate in encouraging and facilitating cooperation, trust, and pride and group identity to all team members. In addition one should prove to have the ability to foster team spirit and commitment and actively work with others in the criminal justice system to achieve criminal justice goals.
