Rahim and Singh, Essay Example

Words: 292

Essay

Rahim and Singh (2007) analyzed the adoption of business-to-employee (B2E) e-business systems in two Australian universities, in order to ascertain the benefits and challenges of such systems (p. 3). I included this study because it demonstrates some of the benefits and challenges experienced by different organizations using different systems of this type. Rahim and Singh found that one university had “introduced an ESS portal from a renowned IT vendor”, while the other introduced “an e-organisational management system” (p. 10). Staff at the first university reported “increased convenience for updating their relevant HR and information,” developments which have “streamlined HR processes and [achieved] cost-reduction” (p. 10). The hurdles that this university encountered were “change management, ESS integration difficulties, lack of IT expertise, and consultants’ problems” (p. 11). Staff at the second university experienced improved knowledge management, leading to better employee relationships; challenges encountered were costs, “change management, high employee turnover, and information overload” (pp. 12-13).

Mohorovi?i?, Tijan, and ?iši? (2010) provided an enlightening look at the use of web content management systems in university e-commerce courses. I found this examination of e-systems used to increase student knowledge about other e-systems particularly topical. Mohorovi?i? et al. explained that web content management systems simplify changing the design of a web site by completely separating “the content of the pages from the pages’ graphical design” (p. 38). Joomla!, for example, uses PHP and MySQL and is simple to use for those of even “modest technical skill” (p. 39). Joomla! makes use of preinstalled templates and allows the administrator to administer “the entire frontend of a web site from a point and click interface” (p. 39). No knowledge of HTML is necessary: Joomla!’s WYSIWYG or “(What You See Is What You Get) editor allows simple editing” (p. 40).
