The decision-making process was based upon a decision matrix looking at the position of the person in the survival group. The current status of that person. The skills that they offered to the group for helping to rebuild civilization.  The future use or what they bring to the party.  A score based upon consideration of the analysis  5= High Safety  1= Low Termination . A visual traffic light Red/Amber/Green indicator RED= Termination candidates . Preliminary decision based upon two candidates with a score of 3 and 2 respectively.  The final decision being to terminate the ex-convict.

The first person to be analysed is the male militant, who manages to survive on the basis of young age (19). He is viewed as potentially helpful in the rebuilding process and creating future children.  His militant tendencies might be useful in an early harsh survival situation. Another candidate is a pregnant woman, who is worth two people in the group because of the baby she is carrying. She can also be considered vital to having future children in the group.  Her anti-racial stance becomes of lesser concern in a survival situation.

Both construction workers are vital in helping rebuilding the new community and are justly considered as potential child producers. An armed man is vital to be in the group as a security leader with knowledge of weapons. He may also be needed to evict the selected person from the bunker and may be a potential future leader and protector of the group. The political person is needed for leadership qualities and provision of guidance in building the new society and can as well be a child producer. The safest group member is the 10-year old child, who represents the future. As to the religious leader, he provides the group with spiritual guidance and hope, which are necessary to maintain strength for survival.  He may also be a future leader and contribute towards child production

In regards to the survived electrician one can state that technology and knowledge could be vital in salvaging any useful materials survivors might discover.  His sexual orientation means he is not a potential child producer.  If technology is not found, there are no immediate benefits; but getting electricity (power) will be vital to future survival and the knowledge needs to be retained. As to the ex-convict candidature, one can point out that there are no useful skills he could apply in the survival process, while, on the contrary, posing a threat to the group if his crimes were of a violent or serious nature i.e. homicide, violence etc.  He still might produce children but could as well introduce genetic faults of a criminal nature.  He poses the highest level of security risk to the group and offers little skill sets for rebuilding.

It is difficult to condemn someone for their past sins, particularly if they are a reformed character.  A survival situation creates strange “bed fellows” as depicted in this case.  The key to survival will mean effective leadership, working together as a team, the creation of children and enhancement of skills.  If any technology remains the concept of salvage will become important in accelerating growth potential.  The Ex-Convict has the least to offer in terms of benefit to the group and poses the largest security threat.  It is for these reasons that he finds himself the condemned person.
