Recycling Paper in the University of San Diego, Research Paper Example

Abstract

In recycling systems, three chasing arrows are used, and these symbols reflect on the elements associated to the system, which encompass buying, collection and processing recycled content products (United States Environmental Protection Agency, 2009, p.24). Recycling paper is an important exercise carried out in San Diego because people understand the importance of recycling. Recycling leads to the making of the new paper and is a common practice undertaken by the United States of America. There are some papers that cannot be recycled, for example, waxed corrugated cardboard food containers, therefore; they are shredded for use as building installation, compost and animal bedding. In this persuasive essay, the aim is to bring out the importance of recycling paper and show how the University of San Diego has contributed. From the report, it is important to give an overview of how San Diego started and why; the views and opinions of other authors; the methods implemented in achieving successful recycling; and the conclusion.

Introduction

Associated Student’s Conservation Clubs are the founders of recycling programs in the University of San Diego. Designated igloos and containers were used, by these students, to recycle glass, cardboard and aluminum cans. In 1989, the Facilities Management came to their aid and helped in expanding the recycling program. Their initiative involved the use of blue wastebaskets recyclable for offices and later to the classrooms. Responsibilities are shared, among club members, to facilitate the smooth running of the club, and this has enabled the facility maintain recycling standards. The students were faced with many challenges, but they pressed on and managed to change the views and opinions of their fellow students concerning recycling of paper. Now, they work together in ensuring that recycling is maintained within the campus and also round the community.

Furthermore, in San Diego, recycling is practiced by many learning institutions and communities because they are aware of the importance recycling brings. Students are gaining knowledge on the significance of recycling paper and the majority of them are engaging in activities that contribute to a sustainable environment growth, which links the environment, gender and democracy. In this global era, it is vital for professional learning communities to encourage students on the importance of sustainability because it spills down to many generations and affects their growth potential. This means that recycling is important because it reduces on waste, which means that it saves landfill space, natural resources, energy and pollution is reduced and vast job opportunities. By law, the California counties and cities are required to trim down the amount of waste by 50 percent. This law has enabled many residents to contribute in moving paper recycling up Associations agenda with the aim of promoting green economy.

Literature Review

Authors around the globe agree that 100% recycling of paper cannot be achieved because some products are not recyclable (hygiene papers and tissue) or collectable (libraries, archives, cigarette paper). Even in theory, this is not achievable, and that is why, in this term paper, I sort to refer to the White paper written by Fisher and Yontz. This paper gives a detailed explanation on how recycling and libraries are identified with cost-effective measures. This material is relevant for review because it expands on the moral of the staff in promoting recycling and the survey shows vividly the number of libraries that conducted recycling measures as a way of promoting environmental sustainability.

The brochure developed by United States Environmental Protection Agency in 2009 is also a good source. It gives examples on how people have contributed to environment success through recycling. Scores of people and groups have joined hands in recycling waste, and their efforts have strengthened the economy. Additionally, they have managed to protect the environment by ensuring a healthier planet for generations to come.

National Geography is also a good source that displays information on how recycling is achieved and why it is important. This program is captivating because researchers go to actual plants to conduct their research and give detailed information on the processes involved in recycling of paper. This source of information is relevant and intriguing because the listener is given first hand information.

Silverman, B. (2008). Recycling: Reducing Waste, is an interesting series that approaches the issue through investigations. All series gives the reader an understanding and helps them conduct experiments and activities individually, which makes them explore their surroundings. Through this, they are able to learn more. The book presents clear facts and images on what recycling is all about.

Methodology

Paper recycling is a process that stops deforestation and reduces greenhouse gases amount generated by use of paper. In San Diego recycling starts at home because they transport them to recycling facilities. For students, this program is conducted everywhere because they are encouraged to use recyclable materials. Methods of disposing them are efficient and effective in encouraging an environment friendly learning institution. This means that students comprehend the importance of going green and are implementing this in their day-to-day living environments. For example, Qualcomm Stadium is the second largest parking lot and has recycled for the last 18 years. University of San Diego also engages in paper recycling activities that have united them to collaborate with other learning institutions in promoting going green concerns.

Discussion

From the above discussion, it is evident that recycling of paper is beneficial to many people including the environment. Paper recycling should be encouraged in all institutions because it promotes green energy and also creates job opportunities. This means that the living standards of individuals of a given country, state or county are improved. Natural resources are also not depleted, and this means conservation is advocated among different generations. By so doing, they are creating a future that is sustainable in terms of environment elements, and this ensures that students implement what they are taught by their instructors. This shows how education is important and encourages many learners to think critically on how the knowledge shared improves the economy of a nation. This, in turn, spills down to their growth and sustainability measures.

Conclusion

This paper has managed to bring out the overview of San Diego University recycling program and how this has contributed to building their lives. From the descriptions above, it is evident that paper recycling needs to be encouraged because paper is a common commodity in many places like offices, learning institutions, factories among other social places. Paper recycling brings about positive outcomes and is a way of improving the ecosystem. University of San Diego is a nice place to emulate because; they responded well to the environmental changes and developed new techniques and methods of curbing their existing and emerging problems.
