The classroom learning activity applied to the service learning is public relations. This classroom activity is concerned with providing favorable information about an organization in order to sustain a mutual understanding between the business and the public. The service learning project provided an environment where I could apply theories and skills learned in class to practical situations. The project facilitated a more practical approach to understanding these theories and also provided a platform to assess my understanding of the concepts learned in class. The project particularly assisted in understanding the concept of public relations, its significance to an organization and how to apply different public relation strategies. The project also assisted me to identify the right strategies and combinations of strategies that can be used to improve an organization’s understanding with its clients.

The project has not only assisted me to better my understand of concepts and theories learned in class, but has also given me an opportunity to understand the fully the organization and the industry involved. The project improved my understanding of how the organization operates and especially its supply chain and the importance of public relations to the success of the company. This experience gave me an opportunity to explore my understanding of how the workplace activities are related to classroom activities. The experience also improved my understanding of public relations and the course. Through service learning projects NYIT ensures that students apply and integrate useful community services with classroom learning to improve the learning experience while at the same time teaching civic responsibility. The knowledge acquired from this program will enhance future academic study by providing an experience on how to apply academic knowledge to practical situations and how to better understand concepts learned in class. The knowledge also improves future personal development by providing exposure and the experience required for personal improvement. Professionally the service learning project is immensely useful as it gives an experience of the professional career. The project also instills a sense of civic responsibility and facilitates an understanding of this concept as well as its benefits. This understanding is essential in civic development.

During the service learning project, I encountered an experience that challenged my beliefs and assumptions. This situation involved a disagreement between the client and the organization’s employee. The client sought support from me, and this meant I would disagree with the employee. This experience improved my decision making process as I was able to solve the situation objectively. The situation challenged my assumption of focusing on customers at the detriment of the employee. The situation changed this assumption because I understood that, as a team player, I had to act as part of the team and solve the situation impartially.

The collaborative work undertaken during the program was a leader group model. The collaborative work involved members of different sections of the organization and it involved building the brand of the organization. The activities undertaken include providing information concerning the the company to the potential customers as well as to the already existing ones through advertisement. The collaborative work contributes to both global and cross-cultural understanding as it gives the employees a chance to relate with each other. This interaction assists in making the participants appreciate the different cultures of the participants. This collaborative work experience also gives the participants an environment to exchange perspectives. The mission of the organization is to provide services that are customer oriented. The focus of the company is customer satisfaction, and the provision of its services is especially intended to satisfy client needs. The organization understands the value of its clients and, therefore, undertakes to ensure they are satisfied. The impact of the organization’s mission on its clients is excellent as it ensures that the needs of the customers are met. Client satisfaction is a crucial aspect in the achievement of the organization’s goals as it ensures customers come back for more.

As a team player in the consulting team, my role was to assist the team to make appropriate decisions. Since the team required contribution from each member, it is imperative to note that each of the team players’ contributions was significant. My role in the team was a contributing member whose contribution assisted the team in making decisions and accomplishing tasks assigned to the team. My contribution, therefore, assisted in achieving the teams’ mission since every member was instrumental to the team. My position as a consulting team member has assisted to bring about social change through positive contribution to changes undertaken by the team. Positive contribution assists in social change as it facilitates the adoption of the correct strategies aimed at improving society or the workplace. This experience as a consulting team member will help me fulfill my responsibility as an agent of social transformation as it has enhanced my appreciation of social change. Moreover, this experience has established that I can contribute to social change through active participation and positive contribution through teamwork.
