Essay

Chapters 12-13:  Deals with the demise of Cathy who in a delirium reveals her true affections for Heathcliff. Edgar turns on Isabella for her desertion of him to his nemesis Heathcliff. Isabella demonstrates weak character and her unsuitability to married life as she becomes trapped, dependent upon men who have no interest in her. Heathcliff: is a dark, cold and bitter person driven only by the concept of revenge. This manifests itself with the treatment of his wife Isabella, who he only married to take revenge on the Linton’s, and the subsequent cruelty to her and their child. After Catherine’s death he verges on madness, wandering the moors alone he believes that he is haunted by Catherine’s ghost

Chapters 14-15: Heathcliff hates Edgar and regards his marriage of Catherine as the equivalent to property acquisition “He is scarcely a degree dear to her than her dog or horse” (Bronte).  Heathcliff scorns the Linton’s as proud and unfeeling. The dark side of Heathcliff is further revealed in the treatment of Isabella, who loved him. In this regard diminishes Heathcliff as a hero into a somewhat pitiful figure.  Catherine Earnshaw Linton: The daughter of Mr. And Mrs. Earnshaw, sister to Hindley and Heathcliff. A somewhat childish and mischievous character in her youth. She later looks down on Heathcliff and feels he is beneath her and wants to marry for social class and dignity. She married Edgar and later went mad after giving birth to a child.

Chapter 15-19: The remaining Chapters deals with grief and life after death. Heathcliff cannot envision a life without Catherine and he begs her to haunt him so they can be together. Heathcliff further descends into madness and becomes more withdrawn walking the moors alone.
