Reflective Statement in Relation to My Dissertation, Essay Example

Pages: 2

Words: 532

Essay

Description of the Research

In my dissertation, I had the opportunity to assess the challenges that the gig economy poses to the enforcement of section 230 of the Employment Rights Act (E.R.A.) in the U.K. through the support and guidance and support that the supervisor provided, I managed to complete the dissertation by first visiting critical databases to find useful case laws and articles that provide clarity on the current status of employment and the need for statutory reforms. Once I had access to these useful materials, I dedicated my time to understand the reason realignment of the existing employment framework will be critical in eliminating the divergence that exists between the employment rights and the tiered tax systems.

Interpretation of the Results

In as far as the interpretation of the results is concerned, I needed to take a moment to not only reflect but also to reassess why I was writing the dissertation. Throughout the entire writing process, I was convinced that the emergence of the gig economy was a unique issue in my country as it increasingly continues to raise significant legal debates. I realized that because of the way relevant materials were recorded in the institution’s database, I did not stand a chance to delve into the issue and come up with answers extensively. However, the methodology challenges and roadblocks that I encountered were a point of strength as they encouraged me to pursue my goal to complete the dissertation. The fact that I could not establish why the gig economy was increasingly becoming a contentious issue in the country’s economy convinced me that the area of study was untapped, thus the need to bridge the existing research gap. I believe that the findings of the research were not a waste since they make a useful contribution to the limited researcher accumulated in recent years.

Significance of the Research

In line with the importance of expanding the existing body of knowledge, I felt the need of incorporating specific changes to improve the dissertation. After completing my research, I felt that it lacked a proper description of the method used in collecting the research materials. The advantage of using a literature review methodology is that it saves on cost and time, which would have otherwise been high if alternative approaches such as surveys would have been used. One thing I would change to make my dissertation to be of a better quality will be to incorporate a comprehensive description of the methodology section. I believe that having a comprehensive research methodology section determines not only the soundness but also quality of the conclusion and research recommendation.

Implication/Application of the Study

Writing the dissertation was a significant learning process for me. It was a valuable learning process in the sense that it helped me identify my areas of interest. Also, through the various research writing processes, I was able to explore the subject of the study, define a suitable research question, manage the research project, and make the appropriate use of the existing materials, research instruments and tools. While on a short-term basis, the research writing process will help in shaping my final grade at the university, it gives clues of not only attitude but self-discipline and originality.
