Outline
- introduction: what games exist nowadays, what the interests of children are;
- violence in video games as a disturbing fact in the contemporary reality: how violence affects kids’ conscience, why it is so ruinous and how negative effects are revealed in everyday life;
- finding out who is responsible and whether anyone has to be responsible: who is in charge for taking care about the morality of humankind, especially the growing generation; how this can be done; to what extent the limits on violence in video games should be imposed;
- conclusion: the necessity to keep the measures of control of video games and stipulate the moral standards to which they should correspond; the possible outcomes of such activities.
With the emergence of video industry there have been a number of innovations that have changed the lives of people forever. A new era of entertainment technologies has started with the discovery of a cathode ray tube, plasma and LCD TV sets, video games appliances etc. Nowadays people may do whatever they want and create their own cyber reality in which they fulfill any roles they want and may make their dreams about which they would never dare to think in reality come true. This is a major breakthrough of the 20th century together with many other achievements that are primarily aimed at making people’s life more diverse. However, a set of negative effects has always been recently noticed and throw shade on the role these entertainment ways play in our life. It is true that human needs and wished have become much more diverse and sophisticated, the growing pressure and stress at work demand giving way to negative emotions and feelings people have in reality. But even this fact cannot explain the large-scale increase in demand for violence in films and video games the humankind is witnessing at the present moment. This issue requires separate attention, especially taking into consideration the fact that the main consumers of video games are children who are more vulnerable at the emotional and psychological level.
Children are always eager to have a bunch of new emotions and impressions; they never sit on one place and have fun everywhere. This is why video games have become so famous and popular with practically all children – personally I know no kid who would refuse from having a wonderful adventure with superb 3D sound at his computer instead of playing some old toys or listening to parents grumbling about his or her marks or behavior. However, games are getting more and more violent and aggressive, and there is hardly any parent who can calmly watch his son destroy another dozen of enemies on the screen with a blood-thirsty and satisfied face. Children do not distinguish reality and fiction that well, so they get used to the world where an enemy is waiting for you behind every corner and attacks you at the slightest possibility. This is the direct way to fights in the streets where boys are trying to find out who is the toughest and who has the most expensive gun or bike. This is a frightening tendency – children seize to see what is good and what is bad and adore their heroes who kill millions of people without mercy and have no morality or ethics.
Surely, the issue has to be taken up by some authoritative body in order to find the solution to the problem and implement the change constructively. Every adult can start his small fight in their own apartment, but it will turn into a complete failure without firm support of the society and governing authorities. In this respect the assumption that the government should be responsible for the establishment of certain demands for the morality of the nation and should create an efficient control framework to guide the implementation of these principles. Authority has a magic effect on the masses – if the government manages to ground its choice and decisions it will be much easier to apply the idea into practice and improve the moral climate in the country and all over the world.
Summing everything that has been said up, it is obvious that the situation should be urgently changed in relation to the decreasing morality of the mature and growing generations. In case the situation remains similar it will be impossible to suppose what the society will be like and how degrading the morality will be. In the era of temptations and propagated sins it is extremely hard to sustain the high level of up-bringing and to ensure the high culture of the growing population, so this sphere requires serious attitude, close attention and systematized, comprehensive approach.
