Relationship Between Geography and the Spread of Food Production, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 272

Essay

Food production, whether agricultural or fisheries, are reliant on climate conditions. For instance, any change in temperature and carbon dioxide (CO2) can affect the outcome of crops. In addition, the availability of nutrients, moisture, and water resources are also important factors in the outcome of food production. If there are any changes in the climate, such as droughts or floods, the environmental conditions are altered and can lead to severe effects on crops and fisheries.

Therefore, food production across the globe was and still is dependent on the geographic location and its climate changes. For example, people in the year 7000 B.P. were aware of the climatic conditions and developed irrigation systems that specifically so that they were able to allow agriculture to proceed in the dry and arid lowlands of Mesopotamia. Other evidence of the effect of geography and climate on food production relates to the seasonal migration of the Ancient Middle Easterners in which they relocated seasonally in search of game, as well as wild plant food in which they found at different altitudes. In addition, in 9000 B.P. individuals had migrated to African deserts year round where they adapted to the climate and sought ways to harvest beans, fruits and plants; however, evidence of major droughts in these types of areas has also been documented and illustrating how people were forced out of these areas.

Over the course of time, people from different cultures found ways to produce food dependent on the type of geography and the type of climate for that region. This is evident in the type of irrigation systems and the migrations of populations to specific geographic locations.
