Brief Summary
Youths specifically need background assistance especially when it comes to dealing with the most comprehensive sources of stepping into adulthood. Most often than not, youngsters who are underserved are the ones having a hard time dealing with their adult life due to the fact that they were not thoroughly assisted by their elders when they were still at a younger age. Undoubtedly, these youths are noted to be underserved. Being underserved as they are, these young individuals lack not only food, clothing and shelter; they also lack the guidance of the older mentors who are supposed to assist them in their growth. Being subjected to different consequences of facing the different challenges of life without guidance, it is most often than not common that these youngsters become prone to handling issues in a less progressive and productive manner.
This is the reason why the team of Gould (for release January 2012) tried to complete an evaluative study on how underserved youths respond to the most comprehensive procedures of involvement that they are assumed to take notice of especially in correlation with the approach of helping then find elderly mentors who are expected to guide them. In this study, Gould and his team tries to fill in the void that has been left by being less attended to by those whom they ought to be living with, some older mentors. Targeting underserved children or youths in the urban setting, this study implicates on the use of sports coaching and valuing the connection that the participants would make with the coaches that they are supposed to mingle with.
With at least 239 urban youth participants, the sports participation project started and observations were recorded from thereon. The participants’ reactions and behavior towards the situation were measured through the utilization of the sport motivational climate scale and the caring climate scale which was both placed in relative position with the scale of mentor impact on each participant. The procedure indicated of the involvement of several activities that required coaching while others required less involvement of the coaches.
Practical Implications of Study
Upon observation, it has been found out that the participants responded more during instances when they were being coached and assisted. It was their course of connection with their mentors that made it easier for them to consider the activities and become successful in each turn that they make. These young individuals were seen to have excelled in activities that allowed them to comprehend with other adult coaches. From this point, it could be realized that mentors from an older scale of age-limit does have an impact on how the youngsters respond to the different challenges of their lives. This sports involvement project is more of a relative simulation on how the real life appears to those children who are underserved. Their intellectual and emotional growth become halted or at some point misguided due to the existence of a support[less] community that gives them less time and less care than they actually need. As a result to this, the youths become vulnerable to leading lives that put them and others in the community in grave danger. Learning from this study entails the assumption of the most indicative ways of reassuring the course of mentorship that youths need on the part of social workers providing ample support to these underserved members of the society.
Area for Further Research
While the study does provide an understanding on what is happening to underserved youths, it provided less recommendation on what could be done about the matter. In future research applications, it is expected that the researchers would find or at least suggest better procedures of implicating mentorship in support for the maturity and growth of the young generation. It is through this implicative approach that the underserved children are expected to be given full attention especially when it comes to the course of providing them more extensive opportunities and chances of redeveloping themselves along with the specific course of development they ought to incur towards adulthood. The manner by which mentorship affects the being of a youth insists on the aspect of protection and guidance that even the supposed “rebels” of the society could use to clean up their names. The undoubted definition of what is understood to be misguided youths at some point simply need support from those who can actually understand their plight and the challenges they have to face as they exist in a cruel society. Assuming their needs and helping them learn cognitively from the life-experiences that they get shall provide them a more confident realization in embracing a good life that could provide them more than just an intuitive course of life but a more defined and well-decided lifestyle that could provide them what they needed so as to mature properly into becoming more of an asset to the society that they exist with.
