My article of choice was Remez Sasson’s blog article on the importance of concentration. The writer has great ability to express his ideas in a simple yet amazing way to reach out to the audience. The paragraphs that follow will explain my views and conclusion on the qualities well written article and how the writer is able to catch the readers’ attentions through his excellent writing skills.
A well written article has an organized flow of ideas. The writer has subdivided his ideas in a logical manner. He starts off by introducing his main ideas of what the article entails in the introductory paragraph. In the introduction, he gives a general view of the article content. The sentences in the article are independent, in that, each sentence has a point to explain but the sentences are interlinked with each other in the whole paragraph. The introduction region of a well-written article should have captivating words to attract the reader to the main article. It should also be brief, not more than 200 words. After the introduction, the writer goes to the body part which is divided into paragraphs. In the main body, the writer talks about the main ideas. Each paragraph contains its own ideas. The ideas should not be intermixed in the sense that different ideas are explained in one paragraph.
After the main body, the writer proceeds to the conclusion part. The article is captivating in the reader’s eyes since the conclusion part explains the general storyline of the article. More so, the writer gives his personal view concerning the points discussed in the article. The conclusion part should also give the writer’s stand if the writer was debating of a certain concept.
The author used simple but fluent language in writing the article. This is essentially important since the author is aware of the diverse nature of his audience. Using sophisticated vocabularies would put off any interested reader whose is not a native speaker of English.
Moreover, the writer used bullets to point out his main ideas in expressing the main ideas of his article. The use of bullets is helpful to the reader since a reader may be interested in getting an overview of the article through skimming.
The author also provides the reader with an exercise in order for the reader to see the application of the writer’s ideas in the real world. This was also an opportunity for the reader to use the writer’s idea to change his/her life by applying the ideas given. In this case, the exercise was to help the reader improve his concentration skills.
The use of practical examples in writing to explain a certain point is also effective when used in public speaking. The examples enable the reader or listener to relate a new concept to what he/she already knows. The examples are also easy to understand thus making the reader or listener more interested in the topic.
Moreover, use of brief but powerful statements is affective in public speaking so that the listeners don’t get bored listening to long statements. This is also the case in writing where long articles make the reader get bored.
Organization of ideas in an orderly manner is a vital aspect required in writing as well as in public speaking. Organized ideas enable the reader as well as the listener to understand the concepts with a sense of flow. Ideas that are disorganized put off the audience since they are unable to comprehend the speaker’s main points.
