Remediation, Research Paper Example

Research Paper

Remediation is the practice of addressing failure. The process of remediation involves looking at assessment results and setting up methods to address areas lacking in competence. These methods can include summer school, tutoring, and extra work in the trouble area for students. Whereas remediation takes place after failure is already present, intervention seeks to prevent failure. Intervention is the practice of addressing trouble areas and specific needs before major assessments or promotion is to take place. Some methods are shared between remediation and intervention, such as tutoring and extra practice work. Other methods of intervention include academic preparation and counseling, peer mentoring, advanced or extra classes, and parent workshops. (Pathways to College Network, 2002) A plan of intervention puts the focus on the results received, rather than on the making of goals.

Intervention is the method that brings about the best and most immediate results. There are some things that can be done to ensure teachers intervene rather than remediate. Following certain intervention planning methods can help teachers to stick to intervention. The Departments of Curriculum and Instruction and Student Support Services staff recommend CDM, Collaborative Decision Making. CDM uses a three-tiered system to classify students into groups of universal, targeted, and intensive students. To address specific academic concerns, teachers work through three phrases of problem identification and analysis, intervention design and implementation, and intervention evaluation. Data is collected and analyzed and progress determined every four to six weeks. (AACPS – Departments of Curriculum & Instruction and Student Support Services, 2004) Like the CDM program shows, teachers and collaborators must remain focused on results by tracking progress in their students periodically and then reassessing their teaching. (DuFour, May 2004)
