While standing in the shower, a pain began to radiate down my left leg. It was about 8:45a.m. on a Thursday morning. Was it time I began to think. I was expecting my first child. I had gone to all the child birth classes and listened to what everyone had told me about what the experience would be like. I immediately jumped out of the shower and sat on the toilet expecting my water to break. I sat there for a minute or two and nothing happened. I sighed in relief because I thought I was having false labor pains. I got back into the shower and finished my bath. I dressed myself and proceeded to the living room to watch television. As I walked around the island in my kitchen, I was hit by another pain. During this time, I couldn’t walk. I knelt down beside the island. A few seconds later I heard the lawn mower start. My husband was about to cut the grass. It was May 19th and my due date was only a week away. I was on maternity leave and anxiously awaiting this very moment.
Once the pain subsided, I stepped out onto the back porch and motioned for my husband to come inside. I told him that I had two pains previously that were about 15 minutes apart. He wanted to know if I thought it was time. This was my first child, how should I know. My water had not broken. I thought my water had to break to indicate labor. We decided to wait a few minutes to see what would happen before driving to the hospital, since it was only five minutes away. I sat on the couch and tried to relax. The pressure in the bottom of my stomach made it very difficult. Suddenly, the pain became more intense. I couldn’t sit down anymore. I told my husband to watch the clock. We gathered our pre-packed luggage and placed it by the door. The next pain came. They were now about five minutes apart and very intense. I was ready to head to the hospital. On the way the pain was very intense. I was unable to sit down. I called my mother to let her know we were on our way to the hospital. Next, I called my sister because she was to be in the room with us. By that time we had arrived at the hospital. My husband sped up to the entrance and I got out.
Upon reaching the front desk, I told the woman I was in labor and needed to check in. She smiled at me and asked this was my first child. I nodded. She then told me that it was probably false labor because she had never seen a first time mom walk into the hospital. After being checked in, we were placed in a room. The nurse came in a prepped me and started and I-V. She was still assuring me that I would probably be going home. The doctor finally made it there and checked my dilation. I was four and a half centimeters dilated. The fast pace began immediately. I was about to have a baby soon. At this time it was about 10:30 a.m. I was nervous, but excited. I was doing well with the pain, so I decided not to take any pain medication. The pain was getting more severe, but I was doing well. My husband was pacing the floor. The doctor came in periodically to check my progress. Around 12 p.m. he came in and called my husband outside the room. They were outside for a few minutes and then they came in together.
The doctor informed me that they were concerned about my heart condition and the baby. I had been diagnosed with a heart condition five years earlier. I was told that I would never be able to have any children because it would be too much strain on my already weak heart. When my husband and I found out we were pregnant, we were elated and afraid. I had carried my baby to full term without a day of complication. I was afraid and I began to cry. The doctor reassured me that everything would be fine. They wanted to perform a C-section immediately. My husband signed the papers and they rolled me down to the operating room. The anesthesiologist came in and did the epidural and I felt no pain. By 1:25 my beautiful baby girl let out her first cry. She weighed 7 pounds and 7 ounces. I didn’t get a chance to see her. My husband was filming the ordeal and my sister had her faced pressed against the operating room’s window. I was placed in recovery and my husband and sister went to the nursery with the baby. My husband came in with a picture of our little one on his phone. I smiled, but I didn’t want to see a picture; I wanted to hold my baby. Several hours passed and they finally brought my baby in. When I held her for the first time the tears began to roll down uncontrollably. I held her close to me and kissed her little cheek. She was so small and delicate, but she was mine.
The doctor came in to check on us and asked me if I was a prayer. I told him certainly. He then informed me that the baby’s cord had been tied in two knots, a predicament he had seen kill babies. He said he knew I had to be a Christian. I have always been a person of strong faith. God has always been the focal point of my life. When I was informed of my condition and its repercussions, I was devastated. I prayed and asked the Lord to give me a strong, healthy child. He gave me just what I asked for. This ordeal strengthened my faith in God. All doubt I ever had about God’s ability was erased that day. I later found out that if I had gone through the natural birthing process, both my baby and I would have likely died. Thank God I didn’t.
My daughter is now nearly two years old. She loves attending church and bible study. I am adamant about raising her according to God’s will. The bible tells us that children are a gift from God. I am a true believer of this scripture.
