Essay

People, whose everyday life is routine and stable, tend to neglect those advantages and opportunities environment proposes them. However, each place creates some special atmosphere that has either positive or negative influence on the person. Analyzing those events and things that have affected my personality, I remembered move of my family to West Los Angeles. This episode of my life has not only shaped me into the person I am, but also marked a new stage of my life. Everyone knows that move from one place to another is not a common activity such as vacation or trip. Nonetheless, one can hardly imagine those fears and opportunities associated with the change of regular environment.

I used to live in South Central Los Angeles for rather long period of time when I was a child. In fact, that place was not so good to live in due to several reasons. Being normal and quiet during the daytime, it turned to a real disaster at night. I can still remember that feeling of fear when I was coming home late. Every single time I was walking on the street alone at night made me think I was the main hero of some scary movie. That place was quite stressful and alarming. Slum areas, small overcrowded houses, riff raff people created an image of misery and unhappiness. I understood that I have no other option, but to live in that place and interact with people I would never want to be associated with. Only some of my friends and relatives made this place attractive for me.

Looking for some better opportunities for our family, my parents decided to move to West Los Angeles. My father got a better job to be able to move us and support our family there. Though I was happy about it, I was not sure if it was a good idea. On the one hand, it was a chance to escape from life in the slum area. On the other, the idea that I was losing my pals was quite disappointing. Moreover, I was not sure if I would easily find new people to communicate with. When the time to pack my staff came, I had butterflies in my stomach. It was very sad to realize that I would never see my friends again. Nonetheless, I understood what tremendous efforts my father made, so that we could have a chance to change our old place. My parents told my sister and me that there was nothing to worry about and that we would like both our new house and the new place. The last glance on our old house and we were ready to move. When I first saw West Los Angeles, I was amazed. What most people found custom and usual looked really beautiful both for my sister and me. Slum area was finally changed to manicured lawns and clean houses. Streets were filled with working class people who had nice and expensive cars. The very moment I took my stuff out of the father’s car I have remembered my friends’ talks about move from one place to another. It was always associated with some culture shock because of totally new environment. I always thought that it would be scaring and unpleasant for some period of time. Nonetheless, people tend to get accustomed to good things very fast. Our new neighbors were really friendly people and they had children of my age, who proposed me to join them at the swimming pool. Some period of time has passed and I have found a lot of new peers and friends. Our new house and quiet narrow street became objects of my pride.

This event made me think about future opportunities and strive for better things in life. I have changed my old school in South Central Los Angeles for a better one. In fact, new environment has marked a new period in my life. I have realized that people can adore places they live in only after they change them at least once. I have understood that there is something more than just life in slum area and that people should change bad atmosphere for better one without any hesitation. Once I saw the difference between South Central Los Angeles and West Los Angeles I was amazed how environment may affect person’s perception. As my new neighborhood differed a lot from the old one, my insight changed a lot. Every time I return home in the evening now I feel myself secured. I like long walks in the park near my new house thinking about life, future, and just some regular activities. Though I sometimes miss my old friends, I am very satisfied spending all of my free time with my new pals. This event made me become more open-minded, communicative, and self-confident. Rather scaring event turned to be a new amazing experience and adventure.
