Reparations, Essay Example

Pages: 2

Words: 514

Essay

The United States Government can successfully execute a plan in order to provide reparations for African-Americans.  The injustices involved in the slavery of African-Americans continued officially for nearly one hundred years, at least as the United States existed as a country.  As a result, the significant injustices subjected to African-Americans in the United States should involve reparations for the affected individuals.

Eligible Individuals

Eligible individuals are those who are descendants of African-American slaves in the United States.  This seems to be the most reasonable way of identifying the proper party of African-Americans who should receive such reparations.  Certainly there would be undesirable effects to the implications of making this accounting on the race of the individual.  In other implications, it must be made for only those who are related to slaves in the United States, as this is relative to this country, and not others.

A credible system that looks at the genealogy of known individuals involved in slavery is undoubtedly required.  The focal point of this process rests on the identification of descendants of slaves who were in the United States, or who were involved in dealings of the United States in regards to slavery.

Benefits of the Reparation System

Reparations suitably take the form of education benefits.  There are always positive and negative implications of various possible forms of reparations.  For instance, a sum of money would involve discussions of how much to give, to which not “price” can be given to these travesties.  The implications of the effects on the government or the economy would be more pronounced in instances such as this or job benefits.

Thus, education benefits seem to be reasonable.  Much more than this, educational benefits would allow individuals who have been wronged in regards to their heritage to be able to rise above socioeconomic statuses.  Educational benefits could transform lesser areas within the borders of the country to better ones, where future generations will have more assistance with their education.

These benefits will be applied to every level of schooling, up to the postgraduate level.  Public schools of all levels will be provided free of charge for descendants of slaves in the United States.  At the college level, grants will be utilized for the payment of tuition.  As grants are not used at the postgraduate level, the United States Government will provide interest-free loans to students at this level.

The program will be executed directly from the United States Government.  It will undoubtedly be a way for descendants of slaves in the United States to receive benefits in regards to the many injustices that have occurred.  In the end, the reparations for African-Americans will enable individuals to rise above injustices of the past.

Conclusion

Conclusively educational benefits resemble one positive way to provide reparations to those whose families have been wronged in the past.  In response to this the United States Government should respond in a way that is positive to individuals who are descendants of slaves in the United States, by providing them with educational benefits to help obtain their goals.  These reparations would allow individuals to look forward to their future, regardless of economic status.
